ACT v QLD - Result

Greetings

8,677 souls were treated to a tighter display by the Brumbies resulting
in a win (46-37) and collected the Ricoh Cup to boot (they got a bonus
point against NSW).

Standout players for the Brumbies were Stirling Mortlock who outshone
Chris Latham in the counter-attack department and Travis Hall played an
excellent game at scrum half. You could say he saved the game at the death
knell by forcing a knock on by his opposite number, Sam Cordingley, from a
5m scrum. He also charged down the scrum half's kick from behind a
back-pedalling scrum resulting in a try.

Qld kept in the game by the boot of Shane Drahm, after they were 14-0 down
after the first 7 minutes of the game. Capitalising on Brumbies errors led
to a try later in the first half.

The lineouts were fiercely contested between Harrison and Eales in
particular. The Brumbies loose forwards were a lot sharper to the breakdown
than they were in the Wed match vs NSW.

The Brumbies back line combinations were a lot smoother as well. The
Qld backs in contrast were less polished in that area and there were a
number of times when the centres were given the ball when they were
flat-footed.

All up it was a good contest between two willing teams.

The only annoyance was the reference to the video referee a couple
of times that took an irritatingly long time to resolve the issue. I say
the video referee is a blight the game can do without.

Regards

Stirling Mortlock had a brilliant game.  He attacked often, breaking through
tackles regularly or causing Qld to commit two or three defenders to stop
him.  I think that he'll be a Wallaby soon.

Good to see some open running rugby by both teams.  The Brumbies do like to
entertain their home crowd.

Interestingly, the referee did not call for the video ref for Damien
McInally's second try.  Stuart***enson was fit enough to keep up with the
play and was on the spot to make a decision.  Good to see the RU refs don't
automatically defer to the video ref like they do in league.

All in all, a great game.  The best result being the Brumbies are now
Australian provincial champions!
