EPRUC remove Division 1 and 2 players from Divisional games

Post by Paul Dutt » Sat, 16 Nov 1996 04:00:00

Following yet another breakdown in talks between the RFU and EPRUC, the latter
have announced that no players from the English Division 1 and 2 clubs (which
they represent) will be made available for the forthcoming Divisional games vs
touring sides.  (West Hartlepool have said that their players will be
available for the Northern Division.)

In a hardening of attitudes Nottingham, who previously signed a deal with the
RFU, have said they will put it to their members that the agreement be
cancelled.

The Captain of Rosslyn Park, who are now expected to supply players for these
games, has called for a special insurance deal for players from the lower
divisions who now have to face the likes of Argentina and their formidable
pack.

The RFU have said that places for upcoming England 'A' fixtures which would
normally be chosen from performances in Divisional games are now clouded in
mystery.

Crazy days.

The way I heard it, getting a place in the A team would be totally
conditional on playing in the divisionals. The RFU used the loaded term
"provincial" to describe the divisional games [v Argentina, South Africa A,
Queensland and New Zealand Barbarians] more than once.

From The Guardian (Thursday 14th):

RFU Statement.

Following a meeting of the national selectors on 3 Nov, they reconfirmed
the importance of the up-coming provincial matches.... the three England A
teams due to play on 10th, 11th, and 13th will not be named until after the
completion of the provincial matches. Selection will take place on 3 Dec.

Strange then that this same RFU has already chosen and named the 'A' team
squad without any Divisional games having yet taken place.  December 3rd
should be a good laugh.

And what are you doing reading the Grauniad?  Read a proper paper.  Like the
Torygraph.
