Villeneuve's remark on Video Game

Post by Zondagsrijde » Sun, 25 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I wasn't paying much attention when I heard Villeneuve commenting on his
pole position in the Belgium Grandprix on CNN International.
I believe he said something like:

"I checked out a new video game, and it matches the track pretty well."

Is it possible he meant Microprose's Grand Prix 2?
Or are there other Video Games around like this one?

I think that should be GP2. He also said He only managed to finish 18th
in the game. Donn't if he's in the most difficult level or not.

In the US on ESPN2 the commentators have said that Villeneuve told the press
that he had learned Spa from a video game. (BTW, he has also learned
the corners of Hungaroring from presumably the same game!) The commentators
were so much amused by it that they repeated the same statement with disbelief
several times.

I am 90% sure that Jacq is talking about GP2 - one of his major hobbies is
computers, so I have no doubt that he has knowledge of the game. However,
saying in the public that he is using GP2 would constitute as advertising, so
he is careful not to mention the name of the game until he gets a few million
bucks for it. ;)

But that's just my oiwn opinion.

I also read an interview where he said he had played a video game
to learn the track, and that it was pretty accurate. And yes, it was
most probably GP2, there are no other games that could be considered
a pretty accurate representation of the real thing, so far. I believe
Mika Salo used F1GP when he was learning the circuits for his first
season, at least some of them. I remember when drivers used to jog
or cycle around the track to check out the corners :)

Well, I'm sure since he's new to the game, that he still hasn't
got a feel for the controls yet. I know I took months for both
F1GP1 and Indycar1 to learn their controls. It wasn't hard to
figure out where to turn and all, it just figuring out how to
feel the controls without jerking anything abruptly.

In his case, he probably doesn't have to really do all that well
within the game, just to see where the tracks go.

Yeah, those were the days, weren't they?  Actually, unless he's
changed his approach, JV  still walks the track and makes several laps
in a rental car in a track he hasn't raced on - I guess using GP2
speeds up his "learning curve" (pardon the pun).

I heard somewhere that the two friends Salo and Villeneuve nowadays
rollerskate together around the circuits.

A few years ago I picked up Nigel Mansell teaches F1.  In it it has a
majority of the tracks, plus in training mode it actually puts a dashed
line down on the track for you to follow to help learn the tracks
lines.  By todays *** stds it is not the best graphics, kinda like
pole position, but from an in car view.

I picked it up on a CD Combo pack about 6 months ago at a Best Buy.

I also believe that Jacques has been round some tracks in a motorcycle
