Malaysia? Korea?

I have been hearing recent reports that there are going to be races in
Malaysia and/or South Korea next year. I know these rumours originated
during the tobacco ads fiassco but I have heard that they could be going
ahead despite that all being cleared up. Can anyone elaborate on that?

Malaysia? Korea?

Well, I'm not positive, but I read somewhere that the FIA is definitely
looking to have a race in South Korea.  There's supposed to be a new road
course outside of Seoul, I believe.  Being from Korea, I certainly hope
this is true.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they've built another
Spa, and I wonder what the economic crisis in the country will do to the
race.  But to answer your question, my information was a bit dated, but it
looked like the South Korean race, at least, was under serious
consideration for the 1998 season.  Hope this helps a little.

Malaysia? Korea?

As far as I know, the October GP to be held in South Korea is To Be
Announced.  It depends on several factors:

The major sponsor, Sepoong, a Korean conglomerate had commited to building
an FIA approved track by April of 98.  I don't know if it's done.

The track is located outside of Kunsan, in the south western part of the
country.  The only other hiccup is that there is a military airbase in
Kunsan and they are worried about security concerns.

Then, there is the issue of the country's overall economic condition.
Although it has found some breathing room of late, there still remains the
question whether the sponsorship will be there (from the Korean sponsors),
tv coverage royalties, etc.

I suppose we'll know by summer's end....

although I probably wouldn't get to see it personally, (damn, I'd be sure
to get free tickets!!!), I hope it does happen.  It's supposedly
contracted 1998 through 2002.  If not this year, maybe next year?!?!?

I just watched the 500's from the new track in Malaysia and it looks to be
a decent track.  It's hard to tell how cars would do, but it had med speed
sweepers and lots of elevation.  No fast corners, or so it seemed.
