Overtaking stats from Magny-Cours

Post by Brian Lawrenc » Fri, 03 Jul 1998 04:00:00

For the benefit of new readers - these stats are taken from Autosport
magazine's lap chart and  EXCLUDE the following:

Lapping backmarkers

Overtaking while other car is in pits (or on way to pits)

Manouvers where driver retakes position(s) before end of lap

ANY manouvers on Lap 1

Lap 5   -   Herbert passed Panis for 13th
Lap 6   -   Herbert passed Barrichello for 12th
Lap 7   -   Takagi passed Rosset for 16th
Lap 8   -   Salo passed Nakano for 19th

[Laps 15-16   -   I'm excluding Wurz, Alesi, Fisichella & Frentzen passing
Hill, since he was already in trouble at this point]

Lap 20   -   Coulthard passed Hakkinen for third [MH spun]
Lap 22   -   Fisichella passed Barrichello for 9th
Lap 23   -   Frentzen passed Panis for 10th
Lap 24   -   Trulli passed Tuero for 18th
Lap 33   -   Frentzen passed Fisichella for 8th
Lap 33   -   Trulli passed Tuero for 18th [2nd time]
Lap 35   -   Herbert passed Barrichello for 9th
Lap 39   -   Takagi passed Salo for 15th

[Laps 41-42 At the moment I'm excluding these manouvers since I
think they are incorrect - Diniz passed Verstappen, Takagi & Salo on
lap 41, but on 42 they all passed him again. Also on 41 Salo passed
Takagi, but on 42 they swapped places again - probably gremlins in
the lap chart - unless anyone knows more?]

Lap 54   -   Takagi passed Diniz for 15th
Lap 58   -   Coulthard passed Alesi for 6th
Lap 61   -   Coulthard passed Wurz for 5th
Lap 67   -   Coulthard passed Frentzen for 7th
Lap 70   -   Coulthard passed Alesi for 6th

That's 17 passes (excluding the dubious ones), making a total for the
season so far of 82,

Australia       7
Brazil            13
Argentina    11
San Marino   8
Spain            12
Monaco         4
Canada         10
France           17

Interesting, the highest total of any race so far, contrary to what I thought
and have read, although French TV seemed to miss all of the incidents.

The drivers responsible are:

8 passes        Panis & Frentzen
6 passes        M Schumacher, Herbert & Coulthard
5 passes        Hill
4 passes        Villeneuve, Tuero, Alesi & Barrichello, Fisichella, Takagi
3 passes        Magnussen R Schumacher & Wurz
2 passes        Irvine, Diniz, Salo, Trulli
1 pass            H?kkinen,  Nakano
no passes     Rosset

5 passes from DC moves him up dramatically.

The changes on lap 1 were as follows:

Hakkinen             -2
M Schumacher   +1
Coulthard             -1
Irvine                    +2
Frentzen               -4
Fisichella             -1
Wurz                    +2
Alesi                     +2
Trulli                     +1
Herbert                 -2
Barrichello           +1
Verstappen          -1
Panis                     +2
Diniz                      -2
Rosset                   +1
Salo                       -2
Takagi                   +2
Nakano                 +1

Lap One Gains/Losses so far this Year

Plus 25         Magnussen
Plus 18         Trulli
Plus 15          Nakano
Plus 13          Alesi
Plus 11          Barrichello
Plus 10          Salo
Plus 9            Villeneuve

etc., etc. to

Minus 20      R Schumacher    (surprise, surprise)

Please explain why Jan Magnussen is such  bad racing driver, when hes the
one who has gaines the most places ??
Aware that it is more easy to gain places when starting from the back of the
grid, but this cannot explain the whole truth !!!

Don't read too much into these sort of stats.

I don't have all the Autosport GP reports to hand, but from those I do have,
Jan's season went as follows:

Australia - qualified 18th, gained three places to be 15th at end of lap 1,
retired at end of lap 1 too. Passed Barrichello - out of race; Takagi, also
pitting & Tuero

Argentina - qualified 22nd, gained 2 places to 20th, passed Nakano &
Rosset (big deal)

Brazil - qualified 16th, stayed 16th

San Marino - qualified 20th, stayed 20th

Spain - qualified 18th, gained 5 places to 13th, passed Salo, Takagi,
Nakano, Ralf, Tuero, Alesi, Frentzen & Diniz (Frentzen & Alesi had
a coming together and dropped back, Ralf was involved too)

Monaco - qualified 17th, gained 2 places to 15th, passed Hill & Ralf

Canada - qualified 20th, gained 12 places to 8th, don't have full details
to hand, but Takagi, Hakkinen, Ralf, Alesi & Trulli were all out on lap 1,
so they are 5 of his gains.

BTW His gains should read 24 for the season not 25, I took the 25
from Autosport, who gave him 3 in Australia and 2 in Argentina
but made his total 6, and have carried that error forward ever since.

Why is this? I thought it was exiting to see Jaques going into first
corner ahead of Coulthard, due to Eddie's cutting on Mika. Well done,
nobody complained. ;-> Coulthard had to let of the pressure and Jaques
slipped through. Coulthard passed the woldchampion on first lap, no
problem.

Thomas Gmuer has put up a sequence of Coulthard passing Irvine.
That should be on in the list.
