Eddie Irvine confirmed by Ferrari

: Eddie Irvine has been confirmed as partner to M. Schumacher at Ferrari next
: year.

: Must admit I didn't see that one comming...

Me neither, a complete bolt out of the blue (red?). Still, having
pondered it, I think this could be an interesting pair - Irvine
is least likely of all drivers to be fazed by his partner's
posturing.  I just hope that Ferrari doesn't ruin another promising
young(ish) driver's career.

Eddie Irvine confirmed by Ferrari

: Interesting point. Let's see, Ferrari ruined the following promising
: young driver's careers: Gille Villeneuve (taken directly from the
: snowmobile leagues to drive a Ferrari), Lauda (no more than a promising
: driver at the time, rioned his career no doubt), Alesi (same, only with
: less savvy, a feature which has kept him from being really great, we shall
: see how *** he is next year - likely NOT), Berger (another just
: promising guy who only lately has shown some effeftiveness), Jahanson
: (another long shot who was never to do better in other teams). Which
: promising drivers were launched (no pan intended by the other powehouses?
: Only Jordan has shown some courage in hiring drivers at the same level as
: Ferrari. Irvine himself is a not obvious great talent: another risky
: choice (fortunately Schumacher is not!). Cheers, gfg

Alboreto was tipped as a soon-to-be World Champion by the pundits before
he was signed by Ferrari.  His first season in a nearly-competitive car
showed the potential but after a few years of uncompetitive red machinery
he became a lowly also-ran.  Alesi was similarly rated and tipped when
he joined them, but it took years to get his first win - he's not the
young upstart that we was when he joined them all those years ago and
he's not really gained much.  Lately he's not consistently beaten Berger
who whilst being no slouch was never a match for Senna at Mclaren.
