That's fantastic!  Engineer wearing a knotted hanky, random French chappies wandering about carrying strings of onions, cars all over the road.

I'd like to do a compare and contrast on today's track.

Thank you for posting that link! What beautiful cars they were.
Mike was getting a move-on considering the bicycles and pedestrians.
I think first gear in the D Type was good up to 70mph, in case anyone
was puzzled by his commentary.
Duncan Hamilton's memoir mentions a practice session during which a
pair of D Types had to veer away from a woman guiding her pig across
the Mulsanne.

Yes, classic footage, thanks.
The incredible thing to remember is that over 80 people were killed at the
previous year's race, an accident for which many people blamed Hawthorn
(wrongly in my view but let's not open that can of worms!).
Things were certainly very different in those days.

Pedant's note: it's Hawthorn not Hawthorne

Yes it is; got it right in the copy, wrong in the subject line.

Yes. Whenever I see old footage I'm struck by how dangerous it all
was.

I remember too something that I once read in an interview with Damon
Hill. The interviewer asked Hill what it like growing up with a World
Champion for a father. Hill replied that they went to lots of
funerals.
