Autosport (UK) Driver Ratings #6 - Spielberg (delayed)

Post by Brian_W_Lawre.. » Thu, 31 May 2001 00:34:28

Last season the UK weekly motorsport magazine Autosport (www.autosport.com)
began to publish a driver rating after each race. They don't elaborate on
how they arrive at the ratings, or who makes them. However, it soon became
obvious that the rating MUST take practice and qualifying into account -
it's not just the race itself.

These were their ratings for Spielberg (points out of 10):

10  DC
 9  JPM, Kimi
8  MS, RB, RS, Fisi, Jos, Heidfeld, EI, Alonso
7  MH, Trulli, Panis, Bernoldi, dlR
 6  Button, Burti
 5  Frentzen, JV, Marques
 0  Alesi

JPM 9 points. From Autosport. What a surprise!

How badly does someone need to***up when they are the Golden Boy.
I'm sure they'll still award him 9 for Monaco. Of course they don't
justify them.

Ralf clearly drove better than JPM, making no mistakes and matching his
pace.

As good a job as Raikkonen? Nonsense.

It seems a fixation with MS and the inability to keep your car on the
road are all you need to impress Autosport. Could their bias be any more
clear? I'm tired of reading and listening to people who continue to rate
him on his potential instead of his performance.

Wake up, that smell is coffee whether you like it or not.

He did pretty well in qualifying though and as Brian points out the
Autosport stuff probably covers the whole weekend not just the race.

As diplomatic as ever, Emma. Pre-race there was little or nothing to
choose between he and Ralf. The race is much more clear cut. And Kimi's
performance doesn't deserve to put behind it (every bit as good as DCs
imho).

I think JPM's good, but there are so many people trying to justify their
early god-like prediction, and Autosport certainly fall into that
category. Being forced into such a mistake was not one of his better
performances. I'm sure even JPM would say he could do a lot better at a
race meeting than that. When he wins what will they give him, 17?

Interestingly, from the ratings given at http://go.to/f1info/ JPM was only
given an average of 6.5 for the Austrian race (full ratings on the site now,
and you can also rate the drivers from Monaco).
