it's likely he'll break Alain's record this year.

He will only become the greatest ever when he partners people like Hakkinen
in the same (equal) car and team and walks all over them. Not gonna happen
is it?

With out a doubt I think he will do it this year.  Remarkable really, he has
done it in a shorter amount of time than Prost and he has never really had
the best car.  This years Ferrari is one of the best, but I would have to
think that he would be faster still if he had the McLaren.
A lot of people seem to think that he won't get to Senna's pole position
record, but he should hit 40  by the end of this year, that will leave him 3
years to get 15 poles.  If he gets the record for most wins, most points,
most poles and most WDC he will certainly be considered the greatest ever.

I hear ya dude. Forget what Ian said, he probably just doesn't like Schumi
because he laps McLarens!!

But, let me ask you this. Is there any driver that even comes close in terms
of skill level ? NO WAY! He leaves Mika for dead as an all round driver.

IIRC Senna had 65 poles and that will leave him 25 to get in 3 years,
which is a slightly taller order.

Woops, my math is still screwed up from tax time. Yes that would leave him 3
years to get 25, less than 9 a year.  He is on pace to do that this year.
It would be a tall order indeed though.  I think he can squeeze out 2 more
championships (this years is pretty much in the bag).  I think that Senna's
record will be the hardest for him to get but if Ferrari can stay on top
then he would have a shot.  The fact that Senna did it in 161? starts is
quite amazing really.

Nor has he ever had a team-mate to keep him on his toes. Prost scored
while facing Piquet, Mansell, Rosberg and Senna...Senna was Prost's team
mate for two seasons. If Schumacher had had Hakkinen in his team, and no
team orders such as move over and let the team leader through on the
last lap, then his record may have been comparable. But as things
are...no way.

This years Ferrari is one of the best, but I would have to

I am not now, nor have I ever been a Schuey fan.  But like Jessie 'the body'
Ventura used to say: 'I give credit where credit is due'.  It's not that I
hate the guy either, buy my Ferrari flag remains folded up and on the shelf
(6 years now).  Hell of a driver though.

While it is true that he has never partnered a 'great' at their height,
he has demonstrably out-performed some very capable drivers. Would Mika
or Jacques show such consistent *** over Eddie or Rubens? His two
most recent partners are both very competent drivers, who seem to have
been marked down only through being the teammate to MS. Outspoken Eddie
is a good example, he freely admits the advantage that MS has - when he
could simply have put it all down to being number 2.

The reason behind what teammates he has had are many:

Has he had right to veto, and if so has he exercised it?
Is he worried about being outperformed?
(Well not if he is the arrogant egoist that some here claim.)
Is there great advantage given to him in equipment over the other driver
(as opposed to easily seen team orders)?
Are other drivers worried about being proven less competitive if they
partner him?

Everyone will attribute different weightings to this. On quick
observation is that he is certainly notably more jovial and laid back
this season now that he has achieved his immediate aim for Ferrari.

Well, there are a growing number of statistics which show MS very
favourably. It is hard to come to agreement on what the best statistical
criteria are, and more to the point if it is even possible. Were it not
for one well discussed ontrack incident, his acceptance as one of the
best drivers of all time would be more palatable. Like Senna, he
polarises the F1 community.
