How could you have missed Sir. Geoff Boycott from the Yorkshire XI, for all his
technical soundness and grimness ?!?!

Cheers

The recent posting of Surrey XI's inspired me, and my hybrid (no pun)
Lancashire/Yorkshire upbringing requires me, to produce 2 XI's - for a dream
Roses match. These are ;-

        Lancashire              Yorkshire

Archie McLaren *        Len Hutton *
        Cyril Washbrook         Herbert Sutcliffe
        John Tyldesley          Arthur Mitchell
        Ernest Tyldesley        Morris Leyland
        Clive Lloyd             Brian Close
        Eddie Paynter           George Hirst
        Cecil Parkin            Wilfred Rhodes
George Duckworth +      Jimmy Binks +
        Ted McDonald            Ray Illingworth
        Brian Statham           Fred Trueman
        Johnny Briggs           Bill Bowes

These may not necessarily be the strongest all-time XI's (though I
fancy they would take some beating), but include some personal preferences, eg,
Duckworth is more 'Lancashire' than Engineer.

Near misses who I considered but rejected are

        A.N.Hornby              Hedley Verity
        Ken Cranston            Tony Nicholson
        Reg Spooner             Roy Kilner

Traditionalists wishing for a more dour Roses match (critics might ask
if there were any other) would wish to consider ;-

        W.H.(Stonewaller) Barlow, and
Harry ('No fours before lunch') Makepeace

        for Lancashire, and

        Emmott Robinson and
        George Macauley

to provide the necessary grimness for Yorkshire.

The result - what else but a draw. (Probably with rain thrown in for
                                            good measure).

Good choices, Graham, but one glaring omission. Was it accidental
or deliberate that there's no Boycott? I would have thought he should
go in instead of Mitchell. Oh, and you might get somes comments from
certain quarters about leaving Wasim Akram out of the Lancashire side
:-)

Other interesting alternatives cut; a great side, but I'm a little
suprised not to see a certain G. Boycott menioned anywhere. Surely a dour
replacement for one of the openers?

It is sacreligious to leave Sir Geoffrey out of the Yorkshire team. You have
picked two brilliant openers but unfortunately one of them would have to step
down.

But unlike Wasim, Tendulkar and Richardson had only limited success
for their county, and on that basis wouldn't merit selection for
Yorkshire anyway (regardless of their success for other teams).
