Captain, my captain
By IAN HEALY

"One of Australian cricket's proudest traditions lies in its list of
leaders. These are men of mental strength and great playing ability
who have a high regard for team and country. Success as a captain is
primarily dependant on the team's quality, but the skills required to
bring that quality to the fore are what can separate an individual
from the rest of the list. The Australian team has rebuilt a winning
tradition which will continue indefinitely and, in the process, has
had three skippers who bear careful comparison. People are just now
beginning to look past Steve Waugh to our next leader, but let's
analyse the constitutions of Allan Border, Mark Taylor and Waugh, the
men I played under, before we go any further."
