POLL: Biggest Ever Mistake Made By A Captain

Post by veerag » Tue, 14 Mar 2006 11:12:22

After the crazy match between AUS-SA, I tried to think of things that
captains have done that can be argued as having hurt their team (for
the sake of argument, with hindsight).

Maybe its the absurdity of Ponting's decision (persisiting with a
8-0-88-0 bowler when he's been the _worst_ bowler on your team), I dont
know, but I cant think of other mistakes by a captain that can compare
to this.

Some decisions (that I can think of) that can be argued as being as
ill-advised are Hussein inserting Aus, Kapil Dev agreeing with Chetan
Sharma to bowl the yorker, SRW enforcing the follow-on, etc. But
seriously, none were defending 400+ in 50 overs!!! They just dont
compare!

Can anyone think of other decisions that captains have made that they
think changed the outcome of the match this much? Even on hindsight.

Veerags.

Dear vee'srag's,
The biggest mistake ever made was when Dravid declared when I was batting on
194*. If he had not declared then I would scored minimum 500*.  Unless I got
an unplayable delivery or a bad shoulder before wicket decision or lost a
little form.  Since I am the best batsman and hold the record for the
highest not out score by a Indian in a winbiggest mistake was not letting me
get to 500*, but I will never complain or point out that it is a mistake
because I am a team man and always does what the team wants
Sincerely,
Sachin Tendulkar

i'm sure Lloyds mistake in WI v Eng was a lot more stupid and will continue
to be a lot more famous than Ponting's will ever be.

SRW declaration was NOT A MISTAKE. His judgement was perfectly right given
the FACTS at that point.

Just because Aus lost that test does not make Waughs decision Wrong.

Cronje taking money from bookies and seeking to bribe his own players.
Worst and most injurious by far.

It's not necessarily stupidity to bring back a bowler who has
previously been caned once his main tormentor is gone. I've seen
captains do this before where it's worked for them. I didn't think it
was a bad decision to bring Lewis back, but giving him a 10th over
might not have been the smartest move.

When you lose, it's always wrong.

Sobers' judgement was right given the circumstances too.
