UP vs Bengal Ranji final

Where will the final be? Both sides seem to have a decent pace attack.
UP will miss their spinner who will IIRC be away at the U-19 world-cup.
Bengal appears to have a much better batting line-up.

Bengal did incredibly well from being relegated to one division lower
last time to coming to winning the Ranjis this time around. Splendid
performances by the batsmen as well as their bowlers.

I back them fully to win the Ranji and the Irani trophy this time.

That's Piyush Chawla.

Both sides have players doing national duty.  Ganguly and RP Singh.

Not sure when the final is, because UP likely to lose their key player,
Kaif, to the ODIs vs Pak - and quite possibly Raina.  Dada may not make the
ODI XI vs Pak whch means Bengal will be choc-a-bloc with in-form players as
this lineup suggests:

Arindam, Shubhomoy, Jhunjhunwala, Ganguly, LRS, Deep, Gavaskar, Lahiri,
Singh, Bose, Paul.

The finals are 30Jan-03Feb, so it is likely the ODI folks will not miss
the game, and Dada will not be back. However Rohan Gavaskar should be.
I don't know how they decide the venue ... is it based on position?
Both appear to have finished 2nd in the groups.

India's first U-19 match is Feb 6 in Colombo ... so Chawla could play
the final and still make it  there. However, teams are supposed to
report to Colombo on the 31st Jan and play practice matches

Also, did UP (coached by the bombastic Venkat Sunderam) not win the
Ranji some time in the nineties?

No, the closest they got was in 1997-8, when they were runners-up. They
beat Bombay by 3 wickets in the semis at Bombay, after dismissing them
for 94 all out in the first innings. Of that Bombay team, Muzumdar and
Kulkarni are still around, while Bahutule has moved to Maharashtra,
Rajesh Pawar to Baroda, and Amit Pagnis to Railways. But UP were
themselves dismissed for 134 in the first innings of the final against
Karnataka, who amassed 600+ in reply. Srinath took a couple of early
wickets for Karnataka, but Sunil Joshi did most of the damage. In
Karnataka's innings, Arun Kumar and Vijay Bharadwaj hit 100s while
skipper Rahul Dravid hit 215.

Six members of that 1997-8 UP team are still around: Jyoti Yadav, SA
Shukla, Kaif, Pandey, Shamshad, and Zaidi.

-Samarth [ LR Shukla 9      5      9      1 (1nb)... since when did he
start bowling again? ].

Er they werent relegated last time. Dada and Shukla bailed
them out against MP in the final game. It was a bad season
though.

I can see them win the Ranji, since they are about par with UP. The
Irani though is a different matter. They need Dada to win that
one, and even then must be considered the underdogs.

UP have Kaif and Raina who are both probably better than
anyone in the Bengal lineup. While Jhunjhunwala and
Subhomoy have shown promise, the other better known
items like Arindam, Rohan and Shukla are not very good
handlers of pace. Also, Rohan had a good start but has
been off lately, and IMO should make way for fresh
talents like Tiwari from next season.

UP could take a lesson from the Bengal-TN match and prepare
a greentop at Lucknow. That was the only game Bengal played
badly this season. It could backfire, though, but Kaif/Raina
should handle Paul/Bose who havent excelled together
consistently for a while now.

You are correct, I meant "almost relegated". Missed the "almost" bit.

order. The bowling is very good too with Paul and Bose leading the way.

If he does not make the playing XI at Karachi (starting 29th) he may be
"released" to play for Bengal.  What a fate for Dada!

His recovery will be very useful for Bengal next season.

Bose and Shibsagar strike, Baroda 124/4.
An innings win will be a huge m***boost for Bengal.
Baroda had a great season, and Bengal are here courtesy of Railways!
