Hamish Barton of Auckland will be playing his cricket for canterbury
next  season. I have that on good Authority.

Hey, cheer up at least Auckland's results can't get any worse. It's a
bit scary if the loss of someone of Barton's modest achievements is a
problem.

I'm also looking forward to seeing how young Walker does this season.
From what I heard on the radio he can bowl a leg-break and a
couple of kinds of zooter (whatever that means) but not a flipper. I'm
not sure if he can bowl a googly. I left NZ half way through
the shell trophy season and from what I've seen from the
scoreboards on cricinfo when Pocock took over as captain Walker
didn't seem to get a whole lot of bowling. Leg-spinners are
difficult to captain because they need different fields and they
tend to go for lots of runs. It appeared that Pocock was
being conservative which won't help Walker's progress. Was
that the case? Leg-spinners are like gold in NZ crit and should
be nurtured accordingly.

Yup. My *sigh* was more of a comment on the fact that the loss of
someone like Barton actually deserves a comment, regarding the strength
of the Auckland team. Oh well, I'll have to make do with Brooke Walker
getting 10wickets a game to cheer me up this summer.

Sort of.  I was lucky enough to see three of the games he played last
summer, and while sometimes he bowled brilliantly, other times he was a
little loose. He has the ability to bowl an unplayable ball, then bowl a
nice "4" ball.

Walker seems to bowl a *lot* better in the 2nd innings or when theres
quite a bit of wear in the pitch. The problem with this is that
Auckland's batting is so ***that they hardly ever give him the chance
to bowl when he's at his best.

I heard an interview with him where he mentioned he was getting to know
what field settings were best for him, and was spending a bit of time
with Pocock on field placement.

Steve Rixon has also mentioned that he has his eye on Walker, so i think
there'll be some 'nurturing' at least.
