McGrath and Warne's Pitches.

Post by Glen Camarlingh » Sun, 25 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Do you realise this is the first time Glenn McGrath has shown he can
take wickets on unhelpful pitches?  Thus far he has excelled on Australian
pitches (not the true test of a fast bowler) and lush ones in the Carribean,
England and South Africa which were specifically made to counter Shane
Warne.  As a footnote, this makes Warne's performances over the past few
years all that bit more impressive.

Now McGrath has shown he can take wickets on Warne's kind of pitch.
Warne has shown several times he can take wickets on McGrath's type.

McGrath plays for NSW....and the SCG pitches are suppose to be
set up for spinners so that defuncts your theory...
He can and has always taken wickets on any type of wickets and
if you want to look up the records you will find that he has a better
record then DK Lillie on the sub continent.

I don't really think pitches in Australia have been tailored to Warne.
In 12 years of watching cricket all I have really noticed about our
(Australian) pitches is that the SCG has gone to ***recently :o

Besides which, Warne would like to see a fast bouncy wicket more than
a slow turner. This is the same kind of wicket that would suit McGrath
(conveniently this is Perth!).

I agree with your assessment of Lillee.  Truly great bowler that he was,
more than 80 per cent of his wickets came on Australian or English wickets.
he didn't have to pound down on the back breaking pitches of the West Indies
or the sub continent.  As for your reference to SCG, I'm talking about his
international record.  His record at the SCG there is not as good as other
grounds.

But Glen ...you said he had exelled on Australian wickets and didnt exclude the SCG. :-)
Anyway to be fair to Lillee the wickets in Pakistan are a bit more receptive
to pace now due to a couple of very quick Pakistan bowlers.
