How the hell can we sit back and enjoy our cricket?

Post by Jehan Maneksha » Sun, 23 Mar 2003 04:17:24

They've just started the "Shock and Awe" campaign... and i'm not talking
about the Aussies.

While I just posted a big one about how Cricket civilizes India, how
does one enjoy it when the rest of the world is going to hell in a
h'basket?

Just read a UN document that says operation 'iraqi freedom' will cause
1.5 infants to die in the coming few months due to a decimation of iraqi
water supplies.

Hmmm...so just cos it is live on tv it suddenly upsets you? You think the
world was a happy place before this started? You think the best thing to do
is stop everything?

Saw this "Shock & Awe" Campaign on CNN Live in the afternoon. It was massive
bombardment of downtown Baghdad. Beyond anyone's imgaination. I was
dumbstruck seeing it.

You can compare this "Shock & Awe" only to Sachin's carpet/airial bombing of
W&W & Chakhtar.

Two of them will die, but one is half-dead to start with.

Couple of quick clairifications.

1) 1.5 million infants. Sorry.
2) I'm not hassan.
3) "Mentally weak" (?) FREDDY, would be to NOT talk about it, because its too
much grief.
4) OT should have been used, however, I did relate it to watching the match. So
thought against it.
5) Most importantly, the oh-so-insightful quip about it being on the media, and
therefore my sudden interest. --- If you take your head out of the sand for a
sec, you'll realise that while lots of death and destructoin is commonplace in
the world, the scale, the scope, and the nature of this particular war, is
beyond anything you've seen beofore. Its implications spell disaster for the UN
and the world as we know it, and a whole bunch of other things which i shan't
get into on RSC. We can't solve the worlds problems, but if we're aware of some
problems, its not a bad thing to think about it.

Sorry about the OT nature of this post.

(Now i'm in a fighting spirt to go watch India pound the Aussies into the ground
- somethign good needs to come out of this week from hell...)

Later...

3.5 million would die if saddam and his kids are allowed to rule that
country freely for the next 5 years. Wellif not die .. they would
atleast be tortured. have you seen the way some of this prisoners are
tortured; their wives and sisters stripped and gangraped. not only
this, they are documented (pictures and video casettes) articulately
and copies are sent to their relatives, one to saddam and one each to
his inner ring. I think the people of iraq qould be greateful to
america for killing him. Atleast they have  hope/ freedom. Saddam
should go.

did you ever see footage of the massacre of kurds ? saddam used
chemical wepons on his own people. do you know what happeend when he
invaded kuwait how many people died because of him. do you know the
kind realistic danger he holds in that part of the world.

Its implications spell disaster for the UN

Well that aint going to happen now. Would have been nice if it hadn't
started though, and I'm not convinced it had to start.

It is so easy to pull numbers from your arse and say this or that
would have happened. You and I do not have a clue what would have
happened. But the fact is that the attack was/is an illegal one, not
authorised by any UN resolution. This is why the US have been
desperately and unsuccessfully trying to get the numbers in the UNSC
for the last several months. No matter what is found, no matter how
brutal the regime is found or claimed to have been, this is an illegal
invasion and nothing whatsoever can mitigate that fact.

Now lets get back to the cricket....

That'd be impressive seeing as the estimate population of Iraq is
24,000,000 and only 14% of them are between 0 and 14 years of age.
Giving 3.36 million people under 14 years of age.
It'd be fairly impressive if there are 1.5 million infants then...
Nor is it at all likely that mor than 1 in 3 children in Iraq would be
killed if you somehow define 14 as an infant...
