Holding was harping about his grip over and over. I think this grip
allows him to get the kind of shape that made him so dangerous to the
right handed batsmen a couple of years back. I would have thought
injury but we would have known about it by now. My opinion is
1.) Burn out
2.) Extra focus on batting
3.) Seems to be a lot more muscular in chest and shoulders and this may
be restricting his flexiblity and movements
This is a situation not dissimilar to Abdul Razzaq who came up the
ranks as a bowling all rounder who hit 140+ on the speed gun on most of
his deliveries. He was a star performer with the ball in the 99 WC
right through 2002. However, he was pushed up the order so often that
he had to start focusing on his batting. That and a couple of injuries
later his pace had dropped down by about 15 km/h and he is but a shadow
of the bowler he once was
I'd like to say it's not a burn out for Irfan because he has not played
long enough or bowled enough overs for that to likely happen. Perhaps
it's a confidence thing because he seems to have exceled against
inferior oppositions like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh
