First off, I am a great fan of Kapil.  Realistically however, Kapil should
have retired after taking 300 wickets or so (perhaps soon after the
"Miracle at Lords" - WC83).  In trying to be the highest wicket taker, his
bowling performance and resulting stats deteriorated significantly (see
below).

This whole tread began with left-handed paceman and then a discussion of
Alan Davidson.  Davidson took less than half the number of wickets that
Kapil did, but was a tremendous single-handed performer throughout his
career (much like the Kapil).  But like other bowling greats, Lindwall,
Marshall, Hadlee and Trueman, Davidson had to sense to retire at his peak.

I hope you're joking! Some of Kapil's best bowling performances came after
the World Cup -- notably against the West Indies in 1983, and again in
1989. Regardless of what his "resulting stats" were, he was pretty good till
his last two years or so... and that's a *long* way from 1983!

Win or lose, forever Windies.

Hey, I like Kapil too.... Note the words "or so" above.  We were comparing
Kapil's career consistency with other bowlers.  Here are his stats
(courtesy cricinfo)

Wicket Batsman Out    Match                         Kapil's Test
1st    Sadiq Mohammad v Pak at Faisalabad    1978-79  1st
50th   Bruce Yardley  v Aus at Kanpur        1979-80  16th
100th  Taslim Arif    v Pak at Calcutta      1979-80  25th
150th  Chris Tavare   v Eng at Lord's        1982     39th
200th  Andy Roberts   v WI  at Port-of-Spain 1982-83  50th
250th  Allan Lamb     v Eng at Bombay        1984-85  65th
300th  Rumesh Rat'ke  v SL  at Cuttack       1986-87  83th
350th  Javed Miandad  v Pak at Karachi       1989-90  100th
400th  Mark Taylor    v Aus at Perth         1991-92  115th
431st  Don Anurasiri  v SL  at Bangalore     1994     129th

Watch the steady drop in the wickets per test played go down after his
50th test in 1983.  I'm proud as you are Kapil holds the world record for
highest wickets -- I just wish he was the demon bowler he was at the end
as at the early part of his career.  This is where Hadlee and Trueman,
say, surpass Kapil.

Actually, after the India WI series in India ('83-84), Kapil had big
problem with his knees. Some Indian player mentioned that Kapil's
knees had swollen like footballs when he returned to the pavilion
after that 9 wicket haul at Ahmedabad. Since, Kapil had no chance to
recuperate (he had about 2-3 months before Australia toured India for
a OD series), Bowling 30 over spells on the Indian on the Indian
pitches was no sinecure and with no support at the other end, he was
forced to bowl what he could. Kapil was forced to bowl at military
medium until about 1987 to preserve what was left of his knees. If you
observe the Indo-Pak series in '87, Kapil resorted to bowling like
Amarnath (!) in a couple of tests (Jaipur?) as at the final OD against
the Sri Lankans in '86 (he bowled offspin in the final over at the run
feast at B'by).

Compare this with Imran, who took two years off for that shin injury
and returned almost the same bowler.

His stats as of about 84-85

not the stats of a great bowler at that time in world cricket, cw Hadlee,
Marshall, Lillee, Garner, Holding etc

Well, Imran did lose his outswing and some pace. He no longer was
the fastest bowler in the world. He did get wickets and win matches,
notably in two series against the WI and one series against England.
But I wouldn't say he was the same bowler. The Imran of '82-83 was
better.
