 Complete first class records :

Player         M   I    NO   Runs   50   100 HI   AV       ct st
Hayden, M.L.    32   57    4  2694  16     5 161*    50.83 30  0
Martyn, D.R.    34   57    9  2631  13     9  139    54.81 23  1
Slater, M.J.    20   34    4  1932  12     6  152    64.40 12  0

Thought theses figures might be of interest. Of course none
of these can ever hope to match Hick with respect to total
runs because they don't play 30 matches a year. However I would consider
most of these runs of higher quality than most of Hick.
The averages of the Australian players in England tells the story
Boon 100+ Martyn 90+ Slater 80+ Waugh 90+. The only thing that keeps the
averages down is have to keep concentration and not go for a free for all.
I believe even South Australia would thrash most counties. Mind you we
quite often hear about all the ex-England players in each county, just
remember that most are failures.

I think you are quite wrong.  The complaints about
County cricket have more to do with the structure of the
games etc than the quality of the teams (in general).

Some current `county cricketers' are Viv Richards, G. Greenidge,
        W. Younis, W. Akram etc.  There are 3 times as many playing county
cricketers than Shield (198 to 66 or something), so outdoubtedly the
talent is spread thinner in places, but the cream is, well, pretty
        decent!

A couple of 40 year old West Indian batsman

And a couple of bowlers who are one to a team and generally ARE the county
bowling line ups.

The cream might be decent, but it's spread very thin. About one per
county. If they tried cutting it down to 8 or 10 teams then maybe but
a hell of a lot of county players would be only just in some
of the better Perth and Sydney grade teams.

What I mean  is South Australia is clearly the weakest State in the Shield
simply because they've got a sub-grade standard bowling line up. One good
maketh not a bowling line up.

If theirs a test on South Australia could draw but never will South
Australia bowl Victoria out for less than SA can make in one innings.
