People still remember me making that comment about Basit Ali prior to
the West Indies tour, and they lose no opportunity to remind me about it.
The fact of the matter is that I had last seen Basit Ali play in the
beginning of 1989 and quite frankly he did not impress me at all. His
defence was shoddy and his hitting was ineffective, and the unlikeliest
thing of all was that he could not improvise. Huh so much a new Miandad!
I was stunned to see him do so well in West Indies. The guy has improved
by leaps and bounds and if I had not heard his name I could not even have
said that this was Basit Ali. He had become aggressive, a quality he
never previouly had. He had learned to improvise in a way that four years
ago he was not capable of. He just keeps adding new dimensions to his
game each time I see him. In Sharjah he demonstrated the ability to use
brute power in his batting with telling effect. I wonder what he will
come up with next. I hope it is something good.
