Rookie of the Year, 1996

Post by Pankaj Ja » Sun, 10 Nov 1996 04:00:00

hi!

Who would get the Rookie of the Year (if there were such an award) for
1996?

At this point of time :

Rahul Dravid seems to be the front runner. For his class. He has become one of the
most consistent performers in Indian side both in Test Matches and in ODIs.

For test matches alone it would definitely be Ganguly.

(Prasad did play his first Test Match this year so he might
qualify, but since he has been playing ODIs for a while I
am not considering him as a rookie).

For ODIs Shahid Afridi is a very strong Candidate but he has played only
two good (both great actually) innings, so I will perhaps watch him for
a few more matches before I rank him the first in ODIs.

Sunil Joshi is good, but not good enough to be qualfied as rookie of the year.
Hasan Raja has't shown a lot till now. There have been a bunch of New comers in
Pakistan but no one else seems to be consistent enough.

I cannot think of too many others who might qualify!

Almost all good players for SA, SL and Aus. have been around for some time now.
Can't think of any strong performances by a rookie from WI, NZ or ZIM either.
(Oops what looked like a promising thread to start seems to be fizzling out
already!! :-) ).

I hope I am not missing any good one out.

How about Saqlain Mushtaq.  I know he started in 1995 but 1996 was his
first full year.  Is it not how the rookie of the year award goes?

Oops! Apologies for missing Saqlain, he is so good that he seems like a pro
already. Yes he is a very STRONG contender, actually perhaps the best.

Also Shahid Nazir is considered to be good (would like to read more about him).
How good is SC De Silva?

Nathan Astle, easily.
In his debut season he scored 5 hundreds for NZ, is now regarded as
New Zealand's best batsman, is an excellent fielder. Scored back to
back test centuries in the West Indies under immence pressure both
times coming in when the chips were down.

Except that he was already playing well in 1995 :-)

Well I have a NZ Rookie candidate for 1995-96 season, so that may
count. Nathan Astle! 3 One Day International Centuries and Two
centuries v West Indies in the W Indies! Top that MR Dravid!
