England selectors would do well to make a lot of changes
from the present english side which was humiliated in every department
        of the game.

I feel the captain should be changed. david Gower should be
made the captain. Gooch seems to be jaded not keen upto the things,

        My team would be:

        (1) David Gower (c)
        (2) Graham Gooch
        (3) robin Smith
        (4) Mark ramprakash
        (5) graeme Hick
        (6) Ian Botham
        (7) Alec stewart ( W.K)
        (8) Chris Lewis
        (9) ?
        (10)?
        (11) ?
        (12) ?

There is room for a spinner and threee pace bowlers in the
twelve. depending upon the performances in the county games
and form they are to be selected.

Neal Mallender, neal radford, Paul jarvis, Foster, Pringle
and Fraser are the possible contenders.

This should be a quite a balanced team.

        Talluri.

I wouldn't make him captain, myself, but pick him surely, especially if
makes runs for Hampshire

I guess we have to persist but can't help thinking his eye has gone.

Yes, one of the few engl;and players who plays the fast bowling off the
wicket

No way

Botham will have to play a lot of devastating cricket for Durham and
demonstrate his fitness to get a look in.

Defreitas had a miserablke tour but I wouldn't discount him./ Plenty of
experience.
Malcom will be lucky to get a game.

Gower captain? He led England to 10 successive losses against W.Indies,
so he can't do any worse next winter, I suppose.
Gooch has shown great leadership qualities, but seems to have up and down
spells as far as his attitude is concerned. He gets depressed and worried
about things. If his attitude is right I would pick him as captain. If it
isn't he will probably say so himself.

Radford used to be a good County bowler - he's past even that now, I fear.
Pringle also has probably had his day.
Foster  is also getting old - but if he's fit then he's a contender.
Fraser is the one big hope.
De Freitas is young enough to bounce back.
Mallender is OK on the right pitches.
Jarvis still has a future.

Much as I like Botham, his inclusion would be a retrograde step.
As for spinners... I wish I could think of one.

Looking at the spinners around the world, it is clear England made a mistake
around 8 years ago. Dipak Patel was then on the verge of an England
appearence (at least at the England A level) as a batsman who can bowl.
If they had picked him then, he would probably never have emigrated to NZ
and played for them. He would surely get picked for England now!
(In case you don't know, Patel is African born and of Asian origins - his
family was part of the exodus of Asians from Africa to England. He married
a New Zealander, and migrated there).

On another note, didnt Hick get an offer to play for NZ without
having the long wait necessary to qualify for England.  Or was it
for his home country... but I still think it was for NZ who were
pretty much after him during his hey days in the county cricket
(remember his 405*)....

Similarly, the news from Vicky that  Aravinda De Silva is emigrating
to NZ surprises me.  Why is he doing it.  He is already a regular
member of the SL team and infact was their captain for a short
spell before ranatunga came back.  Wonder how the Lankans would
welcome him when he plays against them at home..

<splutter>

David Gower *opening*????!!!!

Much as I am an admirer of his,  I cannot imagine him being successful as
an opener.  Maybe in the ODIs, but surely in the tests they should get a
full-time opener?  Maybe Atherton, or Broad.

The latest news from Bristol is that Sid has had another, less serious
kneecap problem (sustained during a gym session) and operation. Probably
won't be back in contention 'till late summer at earliest
