= ASSAM UMPIRE RESIGNS IN PROTEST
= Niloy Dutta, the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) spokesman, resigned from
= the Board of Control for Cricket in India panel of umpires protesting the
= reported "unjust remarks made against the ACA" by BCCI Secretary Jagmohan
= Dalmiya on Guwahati not being selected as a venue for the World Cup.
= This whole controversy arose apparently after a committee rejected
= Guwahati as a possible venue for a WC game. The members of that
= committee included Ravi Shastri, Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. The reasons
= cited were something like 'lack of infrastructure'. One of the
= conditions laid down is that the press box should have a capacity of at
= least 100, whereas the p.b. in the stadium at Guwahati accommodates
= barely 30-35. After the WC venues (for India) were announced, the Assam
= Cricket Assoc. authorities cried foul, accusing Shastri and co. of
= 'bias'... Dalmiya was quick to defend the committee, and this seems to
= be the latest round in the debate.
More on this. Gavaskar, Venkat and Kapil (Shastri's name was not in
the report) threatend to resign from the committee if the board
capitulates to the ACA threat and allots them a WC match. This was
reported in the Hindu a couple of days back...
