I just read this on the IRC #cricket channel site on Cricinfo:

The current #cricket channel topic is:
'Sidhu retires - tour management fail to make him stay.

Would be most interested in finding if anyone else has heard (or read)
this news.

If this is correct, it is definitely a blow for the Indian team - just
when we though that we had the opening pair worked out!!!

By the way, can the team fill his spot with one more player?

It's correct.

Yes, but rather than replace Sidhu with another batsman they have opted
to strengthen the seam bowling, by calling up Ankola, who happens
already to have been in England playing league (as opposed to first-
class) cricket. Having seen the lack of effective support to Srinath and
Prasad in the ODIs, that was probably the right decision.
