I somehow do not understand as to why this bowling
performance cannot be considered to be sensational.

Kapil single handedly restricted the mighty WI team
and put India within 250 runs of victory. I do not
know of anyother way a bowler can so totally dominate
a cricket match. (3lb, 4 caught, 2 bowled) Statistically
or otherwise this should rank as one of the best efforts in
cricket. He bowled unchanged on one end --the entire innings .
It was of "blue collared" variety. No abrupt ending to the match -
no sensational fluctuations. Just goes on to show what determination
& stamina Kapil had.

Thanks for the stats Badri.

It is not because the Ahmedabad wicket was a minefield.
One gets the feeling that he realized that there were
wickets to be got and therefore bowled unchanged.
In the first innings even Binny had 3 for 18 of 6 overs
and included the wicket of the great Viv Richards.

Even a Madan Lal might have got 9 wickets if he had
bowled unchanged on that Ahmedabad wicket.

ha ha! you're talking about a bowler who once went 5 tests without a wicket.
seriously, kapil did bowl well. perhaps not his best performance- i feel that
he bowled better during his 8-85 haul in pakistan, his 8-106 in australia and
his 4-?? which won the lords test in 1986.
in the ahmedabad test, three other bowlers combined for 30 overs and 109 runs
and managed just one wicket between them.
i think you're giving kapil too little credit.
remember, no other bowler made the slightest dent in the WI batting during that
series. kapil had 29 wickets at 18.51. the next best was maninder with 10
wickets for 33.42 and shastri with 12 wickets at 47.25(!).
kapil knew that india's only chance in the ahmedabad test lay upon his bowling.
hence he bowled unchanged.

Stay cool,

By any standards, this is a superb performance.

Noone said it wasnt. The fact being disputed is if it is really comparable to
some of the best bowling performances of all-time as the numbers might suggest.
I think Kapil got wickets because someone had to get wickets on that pitch and
the bowlers at the other end were either mediocre trundlers or spinners, neither
of whom that wicket was suited for.(Despite the fact that Maninder bowled
superbly in the first innings)
