Question regarding the ICC test rankings

England currently has 118 pts, RSA 117.

If England loses 1 game to SL how does it effect the ranking?  If it
loses 2 does that put RSA into #1 spot?

I thought I heard Tony Greig saying, this morning, at the Lanka game, that a 0-2 defeat for England would see SA into top spot, but not a 0-1 defeat. Was just walking into the kitchen at the time, though, so may have misheard.

It's a fairly annoying piece of software but as far as I can tell even a 1-0
defeat would drop England to 114 points, two below South Africa's current
total.

I thought he said that a 0-1 defeat pushes England to #2, but it was
Tony Greig speaking so I wasn't really paying attention.

Okay. I tried the software. It looks like 1-0 SL ties RSA and Eng. But
England has Windies before saffers at home so if Eng can not *** up
against SL (holding breath) and deal properly with Windies maybe that 1
vs 2 series will have something worth fighting about.

That's not what I got.

South Africa now has 116 at the conclusion of the series with NZ.

For SL-Eng:
0-0 drops Eng to 116
1-0 SL drops Eng to 114
2-0 SL drops Eng to 113
1-1 drops Eng to 116
1-0 Eng raises Eng to 119
2-0 Eng raises Eng to 120

Dunno if England will gain any points if they beat WI (or maybe they must whitewash them) but even a draw against WI will pull them further down.

Looks like SL have this Test wrapped up...they have already earned a 125 run lead.

It'd be interesting to see how many teams have had less than 120 points and yet have been ranked number 1. When was the last time it happened?

And in August or there abouts the rankings will get a bit scrambled as
a year's worth of results get dropped and another year's are halved.

Pakistan will probably crack into top three at the time, since their
ratings are pretty much weighed down by the dismal 2009 and first half
of 2010. They 'll first have to get through SriLanka though in the
upcoming test series. I am looking forward to some sedate and sleep
inducing batting sessions from Pakistan, which have won them so many
game recently.

By the way, a 1-1 Eng-SL result will have both England and RSA at 116
points. However, England will still keep the top spot due to a half
point lead. South Africa is currently at 115.9, whereas England will end
up with 116.4.
