IPL Teams - Favourites?

Post by Snaggletoot » Fri, 18 Apr 2008 17:37:47

Hi guys,

I've just started looking at the IPL squads for the various teams and
because I really haven't followed a lot of T20 cricket, nor am i very
knowledable about the domestic Indian cricket scene, i'm not sure who
is viewed upon as the stronger/weaker teams of the tournament.

I am in a competetion with 5 other mates, winner take all and I drew
Kings XI Punjab. I see we have Brett Lee, Yuvraj, Sreesanth and a few
other useful players, but the team doesn't look too strong against
some of the other teams. Is this team based up north in the Punjab
disctrict?? And where on earth is Deccan? Never heard of the place.

Any info on the favourites, potential front runners etc will be really
handy.

Cheers,

S

Yes, this team is based in Mohali, which is a suburb of Chandigarh
(the capital of Punjab). BTW, Punjab is a state not a district.

Here's a profile of Punjab Kings XI on the website Cricket365.com

The team 'Deccan Chargers' is based in Hyderabad and takes
its name from a media publishing house, Deccan Chronicle.
There's also a newspaper, Deccan Herald, which is published
from Bangalore, in the south of India. The word 'Deccan'
generally refers to the Deccan Plateau which is a large plateau in
India.

Well, a couple of IPL teams like Hyderabad and Chennai
have been identified as favourites based on some good
player picks. However, nothing is certain till the tournament
   actually begins.

I'd have thought nothing is certain until the tournament actually ends.

Cheers SoS. Appreciated. Looked at the run down of the Punjab team and
they look pretty strong. A very well-balanced side which the preview
mentions. I think the Royal Challengers might struggle with no know
big hitters.

Who comes up with the names anyway? The Knight Riders?!?! What the??
And what is a Royal Challenger?

Idiot, it is based on a series in USA. Knight Riders are supposed to
be a group of armed men who are victorious over others.

It is the name of a liquor brand. The liquor baron Vijay Mallya is
owning the Bangalore team.

First, learn something about India before shooting your mouth off.

Royal Challenge is the brand of hooch peddled by the owner of the
Bangalore team, Vijay Mallya. His other brands are Bagpiper, Whyte &
Mackay and McDowell's.

He also owns Bouvet Ladubay, which would have made a fine name for the
team in terms of the entertainment value of listening to various TV
personalities attempting to pronounce it.

Jayen

The Royal Challengers are owned by a liquor baron, Vijay Mallya, who
also owns a brand of Indian whisky called Royal Challenge. The team
was named after the whisky (a straightforward marketing trick, I
suppose), so Royal Challengers are either whisky-sellers or whisky-
drinkers. Take your pick.

Knight Riders, I don't know. ISTR there used to be a TV show in the US
called Knight Rider, about a vigilante on a motor-cycle or something
like that. Perhaps Shah Rukh Khan, who owns that team, is making a
movie on that theme.

It all depends upon the rules. If a maximum of 4 foreign players are
allowed I would actually pick Delhi Daredevils as having the best
team. Because they seem to have a good pool of Indian players (who
would make up the remaining 7 players). If however, there is no limit
on foreign players in the eleven than Chennai and Hyderabad also are
terrific. And even Rajasthan Royals could pull a surprise. But (and
this is the important point). If there is a restriction to allowing a
maximum of 4 foreign players in the eleven and compulsorily playing 7
Indian players than my pick would be Delhi.
