sachin says 'don't expect too much'

Well all I can say to Sachin is don't worry we have stopped expecting  "
too much" or even
"much" for that matter. Actually some of us are expecting nothing. Both
teams are fielding a second string in their bowling department.
Pakistan's still seems stronger with Saqlain and Mohammed Akram and Aqib
Javed.

Well, What Sachin obviously meant was that he did not have a fully fit
Srinath, Prasad and an in form Kumble.

He also said that playing Pakistan is difficult and only Azhar and SRT
have played them often. And playing in Pak is not going to be easy and
more so with debutants. Its a fact and i don't see how it demoralizes a
team.

  sachin has already demoralized

can someone wake up sachin and ask him that what did india do when they
had kumble and prasad in srilanka?????????

p.s. with sachin as captain, expect only the repeat of asia cup/srilanka
tour misery in sahara cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is funny: him bemoaning absence of Kumble and Prasad, esp. Kumble.
After all, Kumble is fully fit and the decision to drop him was (atleast
partly) Sachin's!!!!

One positive note: Atleast Sachin has stopped promising victories to the
fans, like he did in SL!! He was beginning to sound like an Indian
politician. Atleast now, he is being realistic (like Prakash Padukone).

Finally, about `demoralizing the bowlers' I am not so sure. Probably the
lack of expectation/pressure will actually help them do well. I sure am
hoping for this.

: can really india win if sachin goes in with this attitude?  apparantly
: sachin made a statement before leaving for toronto that 'people shouldn't
: expect too much from the indian team in the sahara cup because we don't
: have srinath, kumble and prasad' !!!!!!!  sachin has already demoralized
: the bowlers before even setting foot in toronto.

You are quoting very selectively from Sachin's interview. The crux of his
statement was that the Indian team needs time to develop, and the bowling
especialy lacks experience. The bowling line-up in Canada doesn't contain a
single player who toured England or SA in the past year, and as these tours
showed, a fully fit Srinath and Prasad make India a much better team. Since
the batting has been fairly stable, the onus will be on the batsmen to carry
the side.

IMo, what Sachin is trying to do is copy something Ramiz Raja did when Pak
played in the Independence Cup. Raja shifted the focus from the absence of
Waqar, Wasim and Mushtaq to the strengths of the team i.e. its batting.
Therefore, the rookie Pak bowlers were not under pressure to perform as W&W
would, but concentrated on playing their natural game. In a similar way,
expecting Kuruvilla and Mohanty to be Srinath and Prasad is ridiculous. If
Mohanty can go 10 1 45 0, then he has more than done his job. The Indian
bowling has been badly maligned since the SL tour, and any effort by Sachin
to deflect the unrealistic expectations of Indian fans from his rookie bowlers
is sound captaincy.

I also read the article, and nowhere does he say "don't expect too much"
as you have quoted (and as it is in the subject). The article just says
(from the article)
________________________________________________________________
Stating that the attack lacked experience, Tendulkar pleaded with the
critics not to expect ``miracles."He remarked ``the bowlers lack
experience and need 12 to 15 months to prove themselves. We have a set
of inexperienced bowlers barring Rajesh (Chauhan) and to some extent
Abey (Kuruvilla). We can't help if someone is injured. We must give them
time to recover,''said Tendulkar in obvious reference to Javagal Srinath
and Venkatesh Prasad.
___________________________________________________________________
This does not appear pessimistic to me. It looks more like a fair
assessment of the team's strengths and weaknesses.
