oz behaviour in Oz/India tied test

Post by Ian Dani » Sat, 06 Apr 1991 08:55:25

Two people have now made statements to the effect of deplorable
behaviour by the Australian players in the India/Australia tied
test.

As someone else requested, could you please provide details of
what you are talking about?

Thankyou.

Ian

Well, I guess two things stood out...firstly, Matthews did a great deal of
bowling on the last day (or was it just the last session), and for the
most part there was a great deal of backchatting going on between the batsmen
and him. Zoehrer kept on bugging the batsmen as the last session wore on.
Personally, I think the actions that actually caused all this to happen was
in IMHO, the fact that Border didn't really expect India to win the match
or have a serious chance to do so..as a result I was treated to the sight
of a test skipper ***ing at the umpires almost non-stop. It made me sick
to watch Border complain and argue about everything. He would stand there,
and rant and rave at the umpires about decisions, the state of the ball
and the price of tea in china..as a result a great deal less overs were
bowled before the 20 mandatory overs commenced. At one stage, I told
my buddy "This victory would have been a great one..now, all the fun is
gone coz' I bet Border will *** like crazy to the press" The fun
really started with a couple of crucial dismissals in the mandatory
overs. At one stage, when the indian wicketkeeper, More, was dismissed, an
argument broke out between Zoehrer and him as he was walking back to
the pavilion. At this stage, Matthews came running up and stuck his
fingers almost in More's face telling him to get the hell out...real
charming behavior don't you think?? Of course, Border did nothing to
stop any of this. It had got to the stage, that I wanted the match to
end as quickly as possible....There were other incidents, but
memory fails me now.

In the hoopla surrounding the ultimate result, all this was forgotten
and since television coverage of this match wasn't international,
none of this really got publicised. Very unfortunate, because I thought
it could have a been a great test match. I'll never forget Dean Jones
batting in the first inning and the standing ovation he got for his
courage in batting with a stomach infection...

I'm sorry, but I lost any respect I had for Border and Matthews after
this match. I still think Border is a great batsman and possibly a great
captain as well, but he's a lousy sportsman and a bad loser.

later,

* Why Pick Australians or West Indians for Unsportsman like behaviour?
I did remember watching the last day of the tied test and Borders
behaviour wasn't bad enough to be singled out.

If we are complaining about "complain, arguments, rave, rant, state of the ball,
price of tea in china, or any other time wasting tactics", Indians are no saint
either. India has adopted time-wasting tactics too. Remember the 3-test series
in Pakistan (which Pak won 2-0)? In the second and third test India bowled
at a rate of an over every 8-10 minites. Bedi and co were the involved Party.

Doesn't Vengsarkar almost always stand his ground (except when he's bowled!)?
How about Gavaskar (and the Lillie incident)?

I you start losing respect for players because of sprotmanship, you wouldn't be
left with very many to respect.

And guys, stop whining about the Dean Jones incident. it's all in the game!

I won't try to defend Mathews, he tends to be over demonstrative and
this can certainly be embarrassing. He does 100% into everything, even
when he shouldn't.

I think you could accept that Border was genuinely upset at the decision
he argued about. Overdoing it is churlish, but I doubt it was a
time-wasting gamesmanship type thing. After all he could have been
bowling McDermott instead of Mathews and really slowed down the game.
Maybe the sun got to him as well as Jones?

BTW complaining about bad sportsmanship from the Windies is like
complaining about the rain in the monsoon season, a complete waste of
breath. However we should expect test umpires to know the rules and not
to invalidate the result of a test by failing to enforce them.
