---------------

India is to host a six nation tourney in November this year, on the occassion
of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the CAB(Cricket Association of Bengal).
According to Mr. Jagmohan Dalmiya, President, CAB, the six teams to take
part, include the reigning World Champions Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka,
South Africa, Zimbabwe and the hosts India.

The inaugral match is to be played between hosts India and Sri Lanka
on Nov 7th at Kanpur and  the final will be held at the Eden Gardens(Calcutta)
on Nov 27th.

The one day tournament of 50 overs a side , will be staged on a round-robin
basis. There will be 15 preliminary round robin matches to identify the
semi-finalists viz., the top four placed teams. The first semi-final will be
between the 2nd and 3rd placed teams and the second semi-final between the
first and the fourth. The semi-finals and the final are to be held at the
Eden Gardens, Calcutta.

The total prize money for this tournament is approximately $65,000(US).
The winners will receive $25000, the runners-up $15000, MOM $1000 and
man of the series $5000.

This is only the second occasion, in the international cricket history, that
such a tournament is being staged, the earlier one being in 1985 in
Australia to celebrate the 150th anniversary of VCA (Victoria Cricket
Association).

-----------------------
In the event of any of the semi-finals being washed out, it will be
replayed (on Nov 26th 1993).

*** Patna and Vijayawada are tenatative venues, awaiting confirmation from
the participating teams.

Patna has been awarded in lieu of Jamshedpur, the request coming from
BCA(Bihar Cricket Association). It may be recalled that boisterous crowds
interrupted the 4th ODI played between Eng/Ind at Jamshedpur on March 1st 1993.

I think India hosted an event like this in 1989 for the Nehru Cup which
Pakistan won by the virtue of the six by Wasim Akram of Viv Richards on the
penultimate ball of the match.

Pakistan "almost certainly" (acc. to BBC) is pulling out of the six nation
tourney. The president of the cricket's governing body in Pakistan, Naseem
Hasan Shah was commenting that it is neither safe nor proper for Pakistan
to play due to "some political parties and their militant wings"!

The final decision on Pakistan's participation is due next week but Naseem
Hasan Shah appears to have decided "unless something dramatic happens".

Don't you think it is a shame for us Indians, being threatened by political
parties that players of a "certain" team will not be "safe"!!

This goddamed parties are dictating cricket too, nowadays! Thats what it has
come to! What the hell has such a wonderful cricket team to do with the
"political" relation between the two countries?

How DARE a party threatens a cricket side, most importantly, when they are
supposed to be guests responding to invitation from the CAB? Thcha!!

The party/ies responsible should be immediately threatened by the government
for stringent actions!! Impotent is our government to feel nothing is wrong...
definitely they have other MORE important things to take care of.. I know..
but even this is not the most unimportant thing!

Moreover... what would remain of the tournament, frankly, if Pakistan is to
drop out! Nothing!!

Pray to god that we see all the teams in the tournament.. what a sight.. India,
Pakistan...etc.. playing da/night in good old Eden Gardens... what a time
to be here!!

Since when is sport not part of politics?  Need I remind anybody what
the sport boycott did for the political situation in South Africa.....
