England v West Indies at Lord's

Who do you think the selectors will pick (which may not necessarily be
the teams you would pick if it were up to you)? My guess:

Strauss                Gayle
Cook                   Devon Smith
Vaughan                Sarwan
Pietersen              Samuels
Collingwood            Chanderpaul
Flintoff               Bravo
Prior                  Dwayne Smith
Panesar                Ramdin
Harmison               Powell
Hoggard                Collymore
Anderson               Taylor

Cheers,

Mike

Looks about right although  Monty as an England number eight is a bit
optimistic, and I would still like Read to be given a fair chance as keeper.
I wonder what happened to Tino Best and Fidel Edwards? Both young, both
quick, both seem to have disappeared without trace.

pretty much all the England team seem to be nailed on - the only
questions would be first the Wicket Keeper - I would go with either
Read or Nixon, with Nixon just shading it.

The only other question is whether Harmison will be carried for yet
another season but I don't think Mahmood of Plunkett have shown enough
class to displace him yet, I think he may well get a wake up call from
Moores, hopefully this will be enough to resurrect the apparently
lifeless corpse of Harmison's competitiveness.

Anderson has always shown huge potential IMHO and I would stay with
him for now.

big hitting wicket keeper in the Gilchrist style, played as a
specialist bat few ODI's last year IIRC - looked good but had a
tendency to get himself out when looked set in the 20s or 30s IIRC.

When England played them a few years ago they looked to have a lot of
class but woeful consistancy, 2 or 3 good days where they were every
bit as good as England but then they would collapse and throw the game
away.

Back then I thought that with a couple of years more experiance and
greater consistancy that would come with it they may be a good side
but they seem to have gone nowhere from what I have seen in the WC.

I think Nixon will get at least one Test, partly as a retirement present and
partly to give the selectors more time to consider the young contenders.
Also, I think England will play 4 bowlers plus part-timers, making room for
Bell. Either Panesar or Anderson will miss out, depending upon expected
weather & pitch behaviour - Hoggard has to play because he's our most
reliable seamer, and Harmison so far this season is doing enough to get back
in.

For the Windies : Ganga as captain, in place of Devon Smith ; and Edwards in
place of Collymore - start the series with a statement of intent, and
Edwards is certainly a more attacking option than Collymore.

Brett Lee is a more "attacking" bowler than Stuart Clark or Glenn
McGrath. Remind me how successful Lee was in the Ashes compared to the
other two.

The statement of intent involved would appear to be "We intend to give
you lots of runs."

Perhaps we can chuck Billy Godleman in straight away, seems a good
chance to give him a start against a test minnow.

Bell
Pietersen
Godleman
Davies (k)
Rashid
Broad
Panesar
Anderson
Onions

Looks like a winning team to me.

Have you see his fiance, Jessica Taylor of Liberty X?  Very nice!
Their kids will be criminally good-looking.

Let's see if the West Indies can even get a side in first before we
figure something out for them.

With England, I hope Nixon gets a slot in the Lord's test. He didn't
make a good first impression at all, but since then he's really taken
to international cricket well - shown some great fight and spirit in
some tough situations, and proven himself to be the sort of battler
who can definitely gut it out for some runs at the top level in
addition to keeping behind the stumps. He's not the glovesman that
Read is in my book, but he has a set of balls that Read lacks, and
competence with bat and gloves that Errant lacks.

Right now I'd pick him, and let the likes of Davies, Prior and Mustard
do some more in the domestics to demand a place.

Liberty X? I take it they are a women's cricket side who are a player
short?

Very good! [applause]

A pop group.  A rather mediocre one IMO (but that's simply my personal
tastes speaking).

Nixon for Prior. He deserves his summer in the sun. If more batting
depth is wanted, Bell in for Anderson with Colly as seamer #4.

I'm fairly clueless about how the Windies selections will go (or what
logic goes into them). But I think Ganga needs to be in there for one
of the Smiths. Depends of if they want 5 seamers or one more good bat.
