mantle of highest wicket-taker

Post by Amitabha Lahi » Sat, 09 Jul 1994 01:16:36

Sometime ago Ramanan Raghavendran posted a highly-researched list (after I
had posted an incomplete one) showing how the mantle of the highest
wicket-taker in Tests has passed from bowler to bowler. Unfortunately I
didn't save it when it appeared (stupid me) :-(. Did anybody save it? If
so, would he/she/they put it on cricinfo? Since it's not available in any
record book that I have seen, it ought to be one of cricinfo's very own
pieces of statistics. Also, cricinfo's list of bowlers `quickest to 100
wickets' is badly incomplete. Maybe somebody can put a more complete list?

Amitabha

ObCric: The Leicestershire and England batsman A.E. Knight was a devout
soul. He used to offer a prayer at the crease before taking guard. The
Nottinghamshire(?) fast bowler Walter Brearley, who hated all batsmen,
complained to the MCC that Knight was trying to gain an unfair advantage by
this and that there was no provision in the Laws for such things.

I'm working on putting it on CI.  Please wait a couple of days.

Thanks Phil!

Amitabha

PS: In the list, Opponent=Opponent against whom record was broken, final
column=new record (career total for some).

Here is the history of the top wicket taker and run scorer in test cricket.
I don't know how to put it on the news group so can you please do it.

didn't MCC finish with 7624 runs?

Brearley played for Lancashire and England. He was unusual for a fast
bowler in those days in being an amateur, and was a great friend of
Archie Maclaren.

Yes, but likely Sobers crossed him at 7460, and stayed ahead for the rest
of Cowdrey's career. The list indicates what the highest aggregate was,
not necessarily the most runs each player scored in his career. Notice
that Clem Hill and Archie MacLaren each show up three times --- looks
like they were breaking each other's record from Test to Test.

Yes, but presumably he had 7459 when he was overtaken by Sobers.

Maybe the above figures are missing the runs he made against
the Aussies in 74-75. The list above might have forgotten that MCC got
called out to help tackle Lillee and Thomson in that series.
