Tendulkar, Ganguly in in '03 much better than what they are likely to
do in '07 (this is mostly due to the fact that they - particularly
Tendulkar - performed ridiculously well in '03 and not because I
think they are poor players now)
Dravid in "07 better than Dravid in '03. His WC average is already at
about 65 or something (many not outs I suppose) but I think he is
going to really shine in this year's tourney.
Yuvray (if healthy) and Sehwag in '07 should be better than in '03.
Sehwag is in poor form but IIRC, he did not do all that well in '03
save for the final and perhaps the Super 6 match against Sri Lanka.
So, despite his current poor form, I am expecting him to be better
than he was in '03.
Dhoni as a 7th batsman should be much better than Mongia as the 7th
bat in '03.
If Pathan fires with the ball and is therefore in the playing XI, he
could be the 8th competent bat which India did not have in '03 (having
said that, IMO, if Pathan is in the playing XI, then either Uthappa or
Sehwag should sit allowing India to have bowlers in the XI)
That then leaves Uthappa vs Kaif...too hard to compare given their
completely different roles.
Overall: I think that India's batting lineup has improved. The one
hitch is that Tendulkar was so damn good in '03 and the difference
between the '07 and '03 Tendulkars could be too big to make up.
Except for the final, Zaheer, Srinath, and Nehra were fantastic with
good support from Harby. The '07 group would be hard pressed to match
their performances. The upside is that in '03, the part-timers had to
chip in 10 overs in every match. In '07, if Pathan gets in, that may
not be necessary.
Overall: I would say that India in '07 is about equal to India in
'03. The problem is that I think that Australia, South Africa, Sri
Lanka, and Pakistan are all better now than in '03.
