Even a message of sympathy, almost unprecedented for an athlete, from the
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, elevating a mere cricketer to
the status of geo-political role model.

Sir Donald Bradman, noted Mr Annan, "stood for the values of fair play and
international co-operation that are at the heart of the United Nations.

"I join cricket lovers around the world in expressing my sincere condolences
to his family, the government and people of Australia, and the game of
cricket, which have suffered an irreparable loss."
