Rest of the World XI vs England (Jesmond, England, July 13)

England's XI suffered another defeat when the Rest of the
World won the first of two one-day games at the Jesmond
Festival by 37 runs on Tuesday.  Players on the fringe of the
national team failed to impress England manager Keith Fletcher,
leaving skipper Mike Gatting to achieve respectability with 90
off 109 balls.  But once Gatting had taken six overs to get off
the mark, England never threatened to get close to the Rest of
the World's 55-over total of 309 for five, closing on 272 for
nine.

Tom Graveney gave the Man of the Match award to India's
latest batting star, Ajay Jadeja, whose immaculate timing
brought him 87 off 94 balls.  Jadeja, 22, who played in three
Tests in South Africa in the winter, came in as a late
replacement for the injured Salim Malik while Gordon Greenidge
took over the captaincy when Viv Richards cried off with hay
fever.  Greenidge made 59 but Phil Simmons, who has succeeded
him as West Indies opener, was top scorer with 104 off 151
balls.

One of his three sixes, a straight drive off Glamorgan
off-spinner Robert Croft, which cleared some three-storey
houses adjoining the ground, was the biggest blow on the tiny
Newcastle ground for 44 years.

Rest of the World XI vs England (Jesmond, England, July 13)

West Indian batsman Phil Simmons, who scored a sparkling
century in Tuesday's win over an England XI, followed it up
with an attractive 58 for the Rest of the World on Wednesday.
But rain spoiled spectators' hopes of further entertainment
and the second one-day match in the Jesmond festival had to be
abandoned after Rest of the World made 149 for four off 25
overs.

Graham Gooch, captaining the England XI, took none for 34
in four overs but held on to a fine running catch at short
fine leg to remove Simmons.  The opener's half-century came
off only 41 balls and included two sixes and four fours.

>Is he not the Victorian wicket-keeper in Australia??

Yes, he most certainly is. A couple of years ago he was being tipped to be
Australia's next keeper. I saw him back in Victoria's Shield winning season
and he really looked the goods. One thing that's holding him back is his
batting which seems to have slipped badly in the past couple of years. He's
still pretty young (very early 20's I'd guess) so there's still a chance that
he'll make it I suppose. He's yet another graduate of Australia's cricket
academy.  I suppose he's playing league cricket over here this summer
(err... winter).
