Blimey. What sort of a wicket, and what sort of awful batting, could
give rise to figures like that?

Ehteshamuddin heads my personal Clown XI. I have never seen as bad a
bowler in a Test match as him, excluding deliberate jokes like David
Gower. I'd have thought he'd be unable to get 5 for less than about 150,
let alone 47. And it's not as though Sikander is going to make it into
many people's lists of Great Players I Have Seen either, though he
wasn't yer actual clown.

Anyone able to throw any light on this match?

Cheers,

Mike

Hmm...I don't remember too much about this match. Perhaps my
subconscious has erased it completely from my memory, deeming it
too painful to be remembered. I do remember rain, damp conditions
(though I don't think the wicket was affected), and awful batting
by India. And I remember Wasim Raja playing a princely innings when
Pakistan batted.
In any case, I disagree with your assessments about the players :-).
In my book, Sikander Bakht goes down as a clown as well. Ehteshamuddin
was actually half-decent in that series. Bakht picked up 8/60 in
a previous Test (don't ask me how; that innings is even more painful),
as well as a 5/55 in yet another Test, but looked like a clown all the
same. The latter being quite a feat for someone who picks up 25 or so
wickets in a series.
And if Ehteshamuddin is the worst you've seen in a Test, you can
count yourself fortunate to have missed Paras Mhambrey when India toured
England in 1996...

<scorecard snipped>

Of course I've heard of CricInfo, dummy. I'd invite you to explain how,
from the scorecard which you've dredged up, the question I asked is to
be answered. As far as I can make out, it only gives the scores for each
batsman, their mode of dismissal, and the bowling figures. It doesn't
say what the pitch was like, what the weather was like, whether the
Indian team all had massive hangovers, or anything else which gives a
clue to why a reasonably useful batting side were dismissed for peanuts
by a couple of bowlers with almost no talent or ability.

All that the statistics can do is make you ask a question, Which brings
us back to where we started.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike, I don't quite know whether you were *trying* to be funny or not, but
either way, your above comment had me in near hysterics for quite some
time.

Not that it makes it any less the funnier to KNOW that at least one other
person around shares my sentiments, mind you.

Cheers,

Harish (in eager anticipation of the "dummy"'s defense as well :-)

Looks like you've got dummy here worked out, Mike. Our friend dummy
subscribes to the theory that "the scores for each batsman, their mode
if dismissal, and the bowling figures" can tell you everything you
need to know (for example it can illustrate Rahul Dravid's inability
to play fast bowling :-) ).

Thanks for the laugh by the way. Calling dummy a dummy made my day :-D

cheers,

Rohan.
