AUSTRALIAN SPRINTER BANNED FOR FOUR YEARS IN STEROID CASE
MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) -- Australian sprinter Dean Capobianco was
banned for four years today after an International Amateur Athletic
Federation arbitration panel found him guilty of steroid use.
After a two-day hearing, the three-man panel ruled there was no
doubt Capobianco, 26, tested positive for Stanozolol -- the drug that
resulted in Canadian Ben Johnson's expulsion from the 1998 Olympics --
on May 27 during a meet in the Netherlands. The suspension will run
through May 27, 2000, giving Capobianco a chance to compete in the
2000 Olympics in Sydney.
An Athletics Australia tribunal earlier cleared Capobianco on
grounds that the chain of custody of his urine sample could have been
broken between the venue and the testing laboratory in Colonge,
Germany.
The IAAF disputed the ruling, but allowed Capobianco to run in the
Atlanta Olympics -- where he failed to make the 200-metre final --
pending a hearing by its arbitration panel.
