Sledging - an Anecdote

Sledging - an Anecdote

I found the following on CI.  While I do not condone the current
behavior of the Aussies and the SA'ans vis-a-vis sledging as we have
seen evidence of recently, I believe the following anecdote
demonstrates that good-natured sledging can be fun, and very much in
the spirit of the game.

Mars Bar For Kosie Venter?

Mark  Taylor,  as  leader of the cricket team branded the world`s
number  one sledgers, recalled this week  how stocky  Free  State
all-rounder  Kosie  Venter was batting against offspinner Tim May
in Bloemfontein on the 1994 tour here. Venter remained rooted  to
the  crease,  despite  May`s attempts to entice a charge down the
track through variations in flight. Eventually, exasperated wick-
etkeper  Ian Healy called out to Mark Waugh: "Through down a Mars
bar; that might draw him out of his crease."  Quick  as  a  flash
Venter  told  Healy: "No,  Boonie`s fielding at short-leg.  He`ll
beat me to it."

I don't know if I'm missing something here, but that's not what
I understand as "sledging". That's just a bit of good natured banter.
What I call "sledging" is th kind of sometimes racist, sometimes ***
kind of exchange that we occasionally (?) see here on rsc. The above
example may be a bit of off-putting "gamesmanship", but no much more
harmful or objectionable than that.
Cheers!

The unexpected doesn't always happen, but when it does, it generally
happens when you're not expecting it all that much.
