ODI performance will decide Sehwag's partner: Ganguly

Can someone explain this line of thinking (see the news article below) ?
Determining the test opening slot based upon ODI performance? Like if Carl
Lewis will make a good marathon runner?

I think Gangs is unnecessarily creating confusion amongst all by
articulating his thoughts on the issue. Doesn't seem quite right coming from
the capt'n -- chiming in with his opinions, rather than being more discrete
on sensitive issues. What do you think?

Chandigarh, June 21 (ANI): Cricket captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday sought
to put the lid on the controversy over the second opener's slot in Tests,
saying the partner for Virender Sehwag would be decided only after judging
the performance of the players in the upcoming one-day tournaments.

He said India were scheduled to play Tests only after a few months and any
decision on composition of the side would be taken keeping in mind the
interest of the team at large.

"There is still five-six months to go for the team to play a Test match.
Presently the team will play in one-dayers.

After seeing the form of the players in the one-dayers, we will decide on
the second opener's slot," Ganguly told reporters here.(ANI)

since chopra has been excluded from the odi squad, his chances aren't looking
good.

What I think is that it means there is a huge row going on amongst the
Indian selectors, that Ganguly is not getting the team he personally
wants, and is making a public stink about his views to put pressure on
certain recalcitrant people he disagrees with.

Then, should India manage to lose to Australia later this year, he can
say "I told you so".

Cheers,

Mike

And Gangs is trying to deflect serious pressure on the middle order (namely
himself) by promoting Yuvraj.

I expect that most non-Indian cricket fans find the whole process of Indian
players 'articulating their thoughts' about other players' prospects of
selection rather strange, given that it seems to be a practice peculiar to
India (with the exception that I imagine the QCCC can dig up something on
SWaugh touting NSV players).  However every man and his dog seems to do it
in India, so why not Ganguly?

Hey, it worked for Tendulkar. At least in Ganguly's case, he has some record
of success behind him. As a captain, Tendulkar had ...

Exactly my bewilderment! Doesn't smack profressionalism. It's like husband
and wife airing their grouses at a bus stop.

Is it my impression or is Saurav Ganguly really talking more to the
press than he needs to. First it was the Parthiv Patel needing to be
consistent comment, then it was assurance that Rahul Dravid will be
the team wicketkeeper in ODIs, then there was the comment that Yuvraj
would open for India in tests, and now this. All these comments could
have been done without. Judging by the response of the cricketers in
question there seems to be a risk of Ganguly alienating team members
especially if team India goes through a slump, just because he cannot
keep his mouth shut. If India's season is not as successful as
everyone anticipates I see Dravid as India's new captain
