"Breaking" the wicket

"Breaking" the wicket

I have seen many instances in Test cricket (heck, I seen it tons of
times in *club* cricket) where a bowler breaks one of the stumps,
which has to be replaced.  In every case, it occured near the top of
the stump and a piece flew off.

Does anyone know if a bowler has ever completely snapped a stump in
half, say half way up, in Test cricket?

Just curious.

Well, dunno about test cricket, but I did it once at school in the nets
when I was about 15.....  the fact that the stumps were left out for months on
end during the dodgy weather of an English summer had little to do with this I
felt.......  it just HAD to be my ferocious pace which I would hurl down 5
lunchtimes a week + matches, practising at all times my Dennis Lillee snarl
and occasional ***-curdling appeal (despite the cricket master's plea that
his ears and the dinner ladies were not interested if I had just almost
broken Bloggins Minor's leg in three places... Bloggins Minor never looked too
impressed with matters either....).

Looking back it appears that all my fast bowling idles were Australian -
I never once wanted to be a Bob Willis, or an Andy Roberts...  the Aussies
snarled and appealed better I think.  Plus trying to impersonate Bob Willis
would likely end up with a broken back or the cricket master asking if you
could bowl off-breaks.....

How did I ever end up being a wicket-keeper for God's sake???

well this has definitely happened a lot of times in test cricket. unfortunately
this is not the sort of stuff that is recorded by ststisticians so i doubt you
can find it in wisden. however, i personally have seen this happen at least
twice in tests.

I have seen this happen in a test match between India and NZ at Madras,India.
This was in 1976 I think.Richard Hadlee bowled Anshuman Gaekwad and the middle
stump had to be replaced as it broke into 2 pieces!

The relative unknown of Australian cricket Greg Campbell, broke a stump
in the 1989-90 One-dayers against Pakistan. The stump he hit was the
middle one which contained channel nine's stump-cam. The stump was
subsequently weakened and broke when Campbell hit it.
