I didn't watch on TV so I don't know but Ganguly probably just made an
honest mistake.  Stop attacking the poor Kolkattan boy and go back to
***ing.

I think so too. He apologised immediately to the batsman and gilchrist joked
about it to ganguly after seeing it in the replay.

***ing?  A pretty strong sledge there from someone who admits to not
seeing it.  The TV evidence is damning.  The ball bounced way out in
front of Gang's hands.  Harby was standing there looking most embarassed
at the display by his captain.  Ganguly put on a faux display of
contrition for Bucknor's benefit. ("Did you say not out?  Geez, sorry,
mate." - except it was the Bengali patois version).

ROTFL! "Honest mistake" must be the IND equivalent of what would be
"blatant, disgusting, disgraceful cheating" if anyone else did it.

I look forward to your horrified retraction when you actually WATCH the
incident in question. Or maybe not.

I guess that must be what you're up to in preference to watching the game.

Because the umpire told him it bounced, thus exposing his fraud.

Well, what's done is done. I think he knew it bounced, but I will spare
him from the wrath of my justice. I am terrible to behold when I am in
full fury.

Perhaps he did not see the ball bounce
because his eyes had glazed over from the
bowling and batting display.

Yeah, right!

Only someone who has never caught a ball in his life would belief that.

the doubt with regard to the catch. But the incident reflects the continuing
problem of fake appeals, ball nowhere near bat, massive appeal would have
eventuated if ball was caught. All sides do it so this isn't a particular
attack upon the Indians but it needs to be removed from the game, in my
view.

No. Cricketer, as his name should show, has dropped many a catch before.
When he's dropped them, the above participle is what he'd usually rather
have been doing. No coincidence that he usually drops the most catches when
his magazines come in.0

What is Bengali patois? My understanding is that Kolkata goondas just swear
in Hindi. "I caught it, you gandu" would have been more likely.

HTH.

Pardon me.  "Patois" (pat-wah) means the idiosyncratic or common talk of
a particular language or dialect or sub-culture within one of those.
"Cockney patois", for example, would be something like "Do wot? Ow's me
old china plate?".  So for me to refer to "Bengali patois" simply means
that Ganguly would put his own native inflection onto whatever words I
attributed to him.

I know exactly what it means, despite my tender years. Bien qu'il puisse
vous sembler improbable, j'ai etudie le francais depuis environ 11 ans
maintenant. I took a forgettable paper on "French Historicity and Variation"
at one point. I'm right in thinking that patois is a French sounding word.
So, as an excuse to sound academic, I can quote from a textbook ...

For example, on the 18th century:

"The different patois derived from Latin, which had gone from strength to
strength in the feudal period, continued for a long time afterwards to be
the only languages spoken by the populace. The edict of Villers-Cotterets
issued by Francois I in 1539 had simply replaced one written language,
Latin, by another, French. Notaries, for example, had simply adopted the
habit of drawing up in French the wills of people who continued to speak the
patois, as we can see from the seven***th century authors." (From Henriette
Walter, "French Inside Out", 1994.)

In effect, my understanding is that a 'patois' is a common tongue in a
specific region. It's not necessarily of a 'particular language' - one
language may have several. For example, Abbe Gregoire concluded that of 6
million Frenchmen in 1790/91 didn't know 'French' at all, simply relying on
regional variations, another 6 million could not hold a sustained
conversation in the language, and only 3 million could hold a conversation
at all.

I don't know if a patois is necessarily, as Abbe Gregoire concluded, not
intelligible to its source language. (The Abbe's advice should be taken with
a grain of salt as no doubt he wanted to denigrate the great unwashed as
much as possible.) I think the term at present is outdated, since dialects
are more common. The main words are generally the same in English - although
perhaps we could make an exception for pidgin english or something of that
sort. If you want to use French in this context, I think "Bengali argot"
(slang) would probably be more appropriate.

But that's in my lousy opinion, dude.

I was just remarking that I didn't think it was fair to say a Bengali
'patois' exists. If a patois is by definition unintelligible to its 'source'
language, as the above evidence may show, then I think that a Bengali patois
definitely does NOT exist. I know several Bengali people - from various
parts of Bengal, Bangladesh, other parts of India - and they can certainly
converse in Bengali.

It's for that reason that I asked the question. I thought the rest of my
post indicated that I knew what it meant.

Only one player has ever achieved the "blatant, disgusting, disgraceful
cheating" status in my eyes. That players is none other than Ian Healy.
