I look forward to your horrified retraction when you actually WATCH the
incident in question. Or maybe not.

Yeah, right!

> "Cockney patois", for example, would be something like "Do wot? Ow's me

For example, on the 18th century:
"The different patois derived from Latin, which had gone from strength to
strength in the feudal period, continued for a long time afterwards to be
the only languages spoken by the populace. The edict of Villers-Cotterets
issued by Francois I in 1539 had simply replaced one written language,
Latin, by another, French. Notaries, for example, had simply adopted the
habit of drawing up in French the wills of people who continued to speak the
patois, as we can see from the seven***th century authors." (From Henriette
Walter, "French Inside Out", 1994.)
In effect, my understanding is that a 'patois' is a common tongue in a
specific region. It's not necessarily of a 'particular language' - one
language may have several. For example, Abbe Gregoire concluded that of 6
million Frenchmen in 1790/91 didn't know 'French' at all, simply relying on
regional variations, another 6 million could not hold a sustained
conversation in the language, and only 3 million could hold a conversation
at all.
I don't know if a patois is necessarily, as Abbe Gregoire concluded, not
intelligible to its source language. (The Abbe's advice should be taken with
a grain of salt as no doubt he wanted to denigrate the great unwashed as
much as possible.) I think the term at present is outdated, since dialects
are more common. The main words are generally the same in English - although
perhaps we could make an exception for pidgin english or something of that
sort. If you want to use French in this context, I think "Bengali argot"
(slang) would probably be more appropriate.
But that's in my lousy opinion, dude.
I was just remarking that I didn't think it was fair to say a Bengali
'patois' exists. If a patois is by definition unintelligible to its 'source'
language, as the above evidence may show, then I think that a Bengali patois
definitely does NOT exist. I know several Bengali people - from various
parts of Bengal, Bangladesh, other parts of India - and they can certainly
converse in Bengali.
It's for that reason that I asked the question. I thought the rest of my
post indicated that I knew what it meant.
