LEG-SPIN BOWLERS IN ONE-DAY INTERNATIONALS

1. Most Career Wickets
======================

Since the commencement of One-Day Internationals, only ten right-arm
leg-spin bowlers have taken more than ten wickets in their One-Day
International careers.

The ten bowlers are listed below.  These figures are complete to
28 January 1995, which is the completion of the New Zealand-West Indies
three-match one-day series.  Only matches classed as full internationals
by the ICC have been included.

Name                   M   BallsRuns Wkt Aver   R/Ov  S-Rate Best
Abdul Qadir          P 104 5100 3443 132  26.08  4.05 38.64  5-44
Mushtaq Ahmed        P  82 4095 3015  92  32.77  4.42 44.51  3-14
Anil Kumble          I  59 3259 2186  69  31.68  4.02 47.23  6-12
Shane Warne          A  35 1940 1209  63  19.19  3.74 30.79  4-19
D.S.De Silva         S  41 2076 1556  32  48.63  4.50 64.88  3-29
Narendra Hirwani     I  18  960  719  23  31.26  4.49 41.74  4-43
Wasim Raja           P  54 1036  687  21  32.71  3.98 49.33  4-25
Asoka De Silva       S  28 1374  967  17  56.88  4.22 80.82  3-38
L.Sivaramakrishnan   I  14  654  468  14  33.43  4.29 46.71  3-25
Rajindra Dhanraj     W   6  264  170  10  17.00  3.86 26.40  4-26

It is interesting to see from those figures just how good Shane Warne has
been at the limited-over game, with a wicket every 30 deliveries.  On past
figures, he could be expected to take 2-37 in every ten overs at the
bowling crease.  The early career figures for Rajindra Dhanraj are also
promising, and it is to be hoped that the West Indies selectors accept him
as a regular feature of their bowling attack.

England and Zimbabwe have each fielded just one leg-spinner in limited-over
internationals.  Their figures follow:

Name                   M   BallsRuns Wkt Aver   R/Ov  S-Rate Best
Ian Salisbury        E   4  186  177   5  35.40  5.71 37.20  3-41
Paul Strang          Z   4  234  153   4  38.25  3.92 58.50  2-30

No leg-spinner has to date bowled in one-day internationals for either New
Zealand or South Africa.

2. Best Bowling In An Innings
=============================

There are eigh*** instances of leg-spinners taking 4 or more wickets in
a one-day international innings, Kumble's performance in the 1993 Hero Cup
Final being the best, while Qadir's 4-9 (in a NZ innings of 64 all out) is
the most economical:

What about Dereck Underwood?

The term leg-spinner is usually taken to mean wrist-spinner. Underwood
was what is generally referred to as slow left-arm (although
himself nearer medium pace), ie the left-handed equivalent of an off-
spinner.
