Today Lancashire scored the highest score in an innings in a county match
this century. According to BBC sx'o clock news. It is 887 ( I may be wrong in
the exact score). With Surrey's total of 707 in the first innings it is the
highest total in any cricket match.

Surrey batted first & made  700 odd with 2 centuries one by Ian Greig
(291) in about 4 hours. Lancashire replied with 850 odd with
Fowler making 366. I guess Gihan Mendis also made a hundred as
he was unbeaten on 70 odd at one stage. Fowler's innings broke
Hutton's record as the highest individual innings at the Oval.
(364 against Australia in 1938). The match aggregate is the
highest in English county cricket though Lancashire's total fell
below the highest innings total by about 40. It seems batsman are
are enjoying themselves in England with 500 totals being
posted quite regularly. South African batsman Cook playing for
Somerset also scored a triple hundred during the current round of
matches.

MCC defeated New Zealand in a one day match- thanks to
Gower. He made 97.

Srikanth has been dropped from the Indian team
to tour England. Vengsarkar has won his place back.

Match Facts

Surrey 707-9 dec (why stop there?)
        Ian Grieg 291, *** 95, Stewart 70, Alikhan 55

and     80-1

Lancs 863 (having been 745-3 and Jesty retired hurt)
Neil Fairbrother 366, Mendis and a.n. other got centuries

Records

1650 runs for 20 wickets is the second highest run aggregate in England
after England Australia (1723-31) at Leeds 1948

863 is the ninth highest innings recorded anywhere and the third highest in
England after England 903-7 vs Aus (Oval, 1938)
and Yorks (887 vs Warwicks, Birmingham, 1895)

366 is the twelfth highest individual innings of all time.  It took 500
minutes, 407 balls and had 5 sixes and 47 fours.

366 is the third highest county championship score after
Archie McLaren (Lancs vs Somerset, Taunton 1895)
and     Graham Hick (Worcs vs Somerset, Taunton 1988).

Other High Scores in this series.

Leics 520 and 249-3; Essex 761-6

This is the fifth highest aggregat score in a match in England.
Essex's total is the sixth highest recorded in the county championship.

Jimmy Cook scored 313 not out for Somerset vs Glamorgan, the 18th
highest score in the County Championship.

Why so many runs?

        1) Essex lost the championship last year after having points deducted
for providing a poor pitch - pitches will now favour batsmen.

        2) Smaller seams make the bowling predictable.

        3) The weather has been outstanding for the time of the year.

        4) The matches are spread over four days and batsmen are taking their
                time.

In my posting, yesterday I said that Fowler made 366. Actually it
was Neil Fairbrother who made 366. The scores:
          Surrey 707/9  & 80/1
          Lancashire  863
Essex  also topped 700. They made 761/6 against Leictershire.

Someone had asked for details about Wisden. The 1990 issue is the 127th
publication & if I can trust my memory the cricketers of the year are
Dean Jones, Steve Waugh, Robin Smith , Jack Russell. I can't recollect
the 5th player but making a guess-is it Ambrose?

Well, I remember hearing on the BBC that the 2 Aussies were Dean Jones
and Mark Taylor (not Waugh) and the fifth player was Nick Cook.

Could someone explain to me why Nick Cook would be a Cricketer of the Year?
I did not follow the English county scene last year, but can't imagine the
performance of a number of the Aussie tourists did not merit more recognition.
There is precedence for 3 members of the touring side (to England) being
the COTY's, e.g. the West Indies in 1976, where Richards, Holding, and
Greenidge(?) were the picks.  Can anyone confirm this?  Also seems to me
the domination in 1989 is comparable with the "grovelling" Englamnd did
in 1976.

It is great to see Jack Russell being chosen, if only, from the personal
point of view of having once (as an 11 year-old) bowling him second ball.
How do people around the net rate him as a keeper?  Is he the best?  Is
he the best standing up?

Having looked through my 1962 Wisden last night I'm pretty sure that
4 out of 5 COTY's were Aussie tourists from the 1961 tour.

Bill Lawry       (Victoria (yeh!) left handed opener)
Richie Benaud    (NSW, Captain, right arm leggie and useful bat)
Norm O'Neil      (WA (?) No. 3 batsman)
Alan Davidson    (NSW Let arm opening bowler, very useful bat)

That series was won 2-1 by Australia (or was it 1-1? I'll have to check
tonight....)

Talking of the 1961 side - this week I was given a piece of paper from
the Scarborough Hotel with the autographs of all the 1961 Australian
tourists! I had to come to Israel to get that.... I met an English guy
now living here who had been staying in the same hotel in 1961.... he had
2 copies of their signiatures and very kindly gave me one. Howzat?

Not Fowler, Neal Fairbrother.  Mendis and Mike Atherton also made centuries.

The TCCB seem to have decreed that pitches should be much better this year,
and also the balls that are being used have a much less pronounced seam thatn
the Reader balls used last year (to try and improve the standard of bowling).

Just a pity that Yorkshire still don't seem able to score runs :-(

a.n.other was Michael Atherton who scored 191.

Yesterday Lancashire were at it again!
In the Benson & Hedges cup match  (against Hampshire), they broke some records
for limited over cricket:
Lancashire scored 352 for 6 in 55 overs, Fairbrother 145, Atherton 100,
with a record (for limited overs) partnership of 244.

Then farce! The umpires calculated that there was not time for Hampshire to
complete their innings (the match had gone into the second day) so they
abandonned it and started a new match of 18 overs.
In its turn that match was abandonned due to bad light (apparently you could
hardly see the ball!). So each county received 1 point.
Because the 1st. match was cancelled, apparently the records won't count!

Fairbrother's 366 innings against Surrey, was interupted by a Sunday league
game (also v Surrey), in which he made another high score (can't remember
the figures) to help Lancs. win that game as well (total was about 267 in 37
overs I think).
