Timed Out

Timed Out

The talk about being "Timed Out" reminds of an incident in
a test match between India and West Indies in West Indies.  I
do not remember the year of the series.  The rival captains were
Bishen Bedi and Clive Lloyd.  In the second test match Mohinder
Amarnath took a long time to come out of the dressing room and if
Clive Lloyd would have appealed for a 'timed out' he would have
got Mohinder out; but he did not do that.  Then in the second innings
Richards was retired hurt and when he came out he wanted to use a
substitute runner.  There is a rule which allows the rival captain
to decide when the retired hurt batsman should come in to bat, if the
batsman wants to use a substitute runner.  Bedi used this clause and wanted
Richards to bat at a particular order which he refused and so he did
not use the substitute runner.  Richards was run out in this innings and the
whole West Indies team was mad at Bedi.  Clive also said that if he stuck
to rules he would have appealed for a 'timed out' for Mohinder.
This incident has been narrated by Gavaskar in Sunny Days.
