Hi folks:

with the ashes tour about to start, I was wondering if our fine friends
in England could fill us in on some of the players the Australians are
likely to face, particularly some of the younger, fringe players.

Cheers,

Hi Matt

There is one up and coming player from Worcestershire who may get a
look in later in the series, Vikram Solanki. He has played at Under 19
level succesfully for England, he is a CLASSY batsman, an off spinner
and a lightening fast fielder. He is still on the fringes at present,
but if he has a good county season early on, he could be in later on.

I wouldn't think it beyond possibility that Hick will be recalled.

There is also Adam Hollioake of Surrey, now Surrey captain, who
was very succesfull on the "A" tour this winter, a big hitter of the
ball.

Also the possibility, if he stays fit, of Kent's Dean Headley, a
fast and usually accurate bowler, if he stays fit. He is of good
pedigree, desended from the great George Headley, and his father is
Ron Headley (quite why he has turned out as a bowler when desended
from batsmen is a mystery!)

And of course, Craig White will be recalled.
Possibly Chris Lewis, and DEvon Malcolm if they have good county
seasons.

Those are just the players I have noticed, I am sure other Britis
RSC readers will have other ideas.

I predict that Solanki will be a BIG star in the future.

Try the likes of Ashley Giles (SLA good bat), Owais Shah (Excellent stroke
maker) Jason Laney (Almost Slater style batting but without the red mist)
Vikram Solanki (Best fielder on county circuit, aggressive spinner) all up
coming cricketers there is a good crop of young but not inexperienced
cricketers on the English circuit that the Aussies will face but not
necessarily at test level

Mark Butcher (solid opening bat) and Robert Rollins both will give Oz a run
for their money

Is this the son of John Solanki who used to play for Glamorgan CCC?  Surely
must be a relation ?  Anybody know?

Didn't he play for Kegworth CC in Leicestershire a few times? (Vikram that is)

I don't think he is related to John Solanki- he was born in India, and
moved to the UK when he was 6. He is about 21 now, so early in his
career- so unless he played for Kegworth recently (or was very
young) I wouldn't have thought he was the same person. He lives in
Worcester I think ( Went to the Royal Grammar School)

(Incidentally I am a Worcestershire member which is how I know this!!)

But the English selectors are so conservative, none of these will get
a chance for 2 or 3 years...

It appears that you are correct, there is no relationship involved.  I
thought there may have been as I remember John playing for Glam when I was
a little younger, and these things tend to run in the family!

The Kegworth cricketer I was thinking of was Afzaal who plays up at Trent
Bridge when selected (and/or studies allow) he played a few times last
season  for Kegworth apparently, scoring well and taking a few as you'd
expect at that level.

Looks like my memory is diminishing the more Tiger I drink:-(

Hi

I looked Vikram Solanki up in the "Who's Who" at the weekend and was
going to post a mail about him not being related to John Solanki.
I was wrong in my info- he went to school in Wolverhampton!

Whats wrong with Worcestershire??? (Apart from me being a member
there that is!!)

O Shah of Middlesex is 17 and meant to be an excellent prospect as he
showed in the A Tour last year

Which bridge? The Severn? Or should the ground be on the other side of
the New Road bridge?

5 days till the start of the season, and the weather forecast is STILL
GOOD! (Ox Uni vs Durham in The Parks starting Tuesday and guess who
works across the road from The Parks- wonder if they could get me an
extra long cable so I could take my PC with me and do my work over
there?)

Oi, no huway! :)

WORCESTERSHIRE LA LA LA LA.   We have lost it a bit since the
days of Hick, Dilley and one I.T. Botham, but we're a good side.

We've certainly got a very strong side, with the highly promising Ben
Hollioake (younger brother of Adam) and Alex Tudor waiting in the wings.
The signing of Salisbury should help the previously weak spin
department, and he should enjoy the pace and bounce of Oval wickets,
even though he isn't likely to get much spin. If Julian is picked for
Australia it will be a blow, and we will miss Graham Kersey, but I shall
be very disappointed if we don't win at least one trophy.

Seriously, I think we have a good chance this year as our one day
strategy seems to be working. Just see our victories in the Sunday
League last year. Also our championship form is up there with the
best, in fact last season we lead for a while before drawing matches
we should have won. Unfortunately due to our overseas player amazing
run of form it seems like Brendon will be touring with the Aussie
team, leaving us to dredge the foreign domestic competitiions to find
a decent player to replace him.

Good luck to the other counties who will have to fight it out for
second postion :-)

Hear Hear- and I may be biased (being a Worcs member)- but I think
silverware will be collected again soon (once we find a decent strike
bowler!)
