Asia vs Rest of the World at Dhaka

Post by Ra » Wed, 19 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I found the following item from indian express. I am not sure what they are
commemorating. But I am sure Dalmiya will get some favors in return.

DHAKA, JANUARY 17: A commemorative day-night cricket match between Asia and the
Rest of the World will be held in Dhaka on April eight. The match was announced
on Monday by International Cricket Council (ICC) president Jagmohan Dalmia
after a meeting here with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Dalmia also
disclosed ICC's plans for a four-nation cricket tournament at Dhaka in May and
June. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will take part in the event.

Another sodding One-Day match.

Wake me when they schedule Asia v The Rest in a five-day match in
Dhaka ... but the result would, of course, be completely
different in Sydney or at The Oval.

My teams (for the ODI):

ASIA:  Saeed Anwar, Romesh Kaluwitharana (wk), Sachin Tendulkar,
Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Yousuf Youhana, Wasim Akram
(captain), Abdur Razzaq, Chaminda Vaas, Javagal Srinath, Muttiah
Murilitharan.

REST:  Adam Gilchrist (wk), Herschelle Gibbs, Ricky Ponting,
Jacques Kallis, Shiv Chanderpaul, Nasser Hussain, Jonty Rhodes,
Chris Cairns, Shane Warne, Shaun Pollock (captain), Glenn
McGrath.

In case you didn't spot it, Hussain is the token Englishman,
although maybe a token Zimbabwean would be better (A.Flower?).
The "Rest" team contains no current national captain, so the
nomination of Pollock is personal choice.

Well, I made a perfunctory search for the figures, and in the
last ODI against NZ he was credited with "steadying the ship" -
quite possibly a Titanic pun, I admit.

I figured I needed a West Indian.  I could just as easily have
selected the Rest side from only AUS and RSA, but that would have
been a bit obvious.

In any case, there may be very few Australians or New Zealanders
available - the 3rd test is due to run until the 4th of April,
giving them three spare days before the Dhaka match.

What about him?  This is a 1-dayer, and he isn't in the selection
pool.

I *did* qualify my selection of Hussain.

... for the Tests.  He will be selected by RSA for the ODIs and
will be worth 20 in the field as usual.

I wasn't aware that Nasser Hussain had been fired as England captain,
a bit rough since he's just led them to a win over RSA.   ;-)

In NZ, most people regard Nathan Astle as our #1 one day player and not
Chris Cairns. Astle bowls at around 33avg with a good RPO rate and
averages around 37 or 38 with the bat.

Against the Windies he got four half centuries in five games and a
30-odd.

Of course, removing Cairns would make the pace attack a bit weak so I
would drop Canderpaul.

Forget the 20. Klusener to get that 20 off his bat, plus another 15, off
12 balls.

Ahh ... I stand ready to be corrected:  Is Nasser the captain of
the ODI side?

Then I sit down again, after fetching the humble pie from the

In any case, I would still make Pollock the captain of the team I
named.

Why? Have you got a thing about inexperienced redheads or sons of
former Test cricketers in preference to established quality captains?
Or do you have a cricketing reason?

Cricketing reason:  success breeds success.  Hussain may be a
quality captain, but he doesn't have a lot of wins to point to.
Pollock, although not the captain of the team, can point to wins
and can draw on the confidence which comes from knowing *how* to
win.  I also feel that Pollock could better inspire the team from
personal performance, bowling or batting.

Pollock has experience, and indeed he may captain RSA quite
soon.  Sons of former Test cricketers do not necessarily make
good captains, of course (just ask Chris Cowdrey).
