Oldest-lived (and living!) Test cricketers

Post by Andrew Dunfor » Sat, 31 Dec 2005 07:52:03

During the month of December two former Test cricketers celebrated their
95th birthdays, a remarkable statistic when one considers that prior to this
month only three Test cricketers were known to have lived to 95 (this
excludes Cotar Ramaswami, the details of whose presumed death are unknown).

The full list of Test cricketers who have lived to at least 95 years (as of
30 December 2005) is:

98y 324d FA MacKinnon Eng 9 Apr 1948 to 27 February 1947
95y 252d W Rhodes Eng 29 Oct 1877 to 8 July 1973
95y 151d GL Weir NZ 2 Jun 1908 to 31 Oct 2003
95y 12d EWT Tindill NZ 18 December 1910 to date
95y 2d JL Kerr NZ 28 December 1910 to date

Should be 9 Apr 1848.

I find it quite strange that not a single one of the thousands of Test
cricketers worldwide ever has lived to an age of 100+.   After all,
these are athletes supposedly with superior fitness than the average
bloke.  Tindill and/or Kerr will hopefully change that.

Hayden has said that the subcontinental cricketers take 20 years
to go from 90 to 100.

Is there any stats on the average life (expectancy) of cricketers -
test cricketers for example? Given that they spend a lot of time in the
sun, have a strenuous schedule, lots of travel, great life style (at
least in the last decade or so), end of career in their 30's and
associated stress from then on in making a living and having a set of
activities post-retirment, etc. Any significant deviations from their
own countries' norm?

One of the most highly respected Indian cricketers did live past the
age of 100.

"The Grand Old Man of Indian cricket, Prof. Deodhar never played a Test
- at 40, he was considered too old when India played its first Test in
1932"

http://content-ind.cricinfo.com/india/content/player/28036.html

Apart from playing first class cricket well into his fifties, he was a
professor of Sanskrit as well. A man with a highly disciplined
lifestyle, he remained mentally alert at the age of 100. You had to be
in Pune during his 100th birthday celebrations to really understand the
regard in which he was held. *Everybody* who was anybody in the city
from the MP onwards was at his house at 7:30 AM that day to wish him.

I did wonder that day if Tendulkar would be remembered in such a
fashion on April 24th, 2073.
