I was just wondering if Anil Kumble is a leg spinner of Chandrasekhar mould or
left arm spinner of Bedi/Doshi mould.
Can somebody enlighten me!

Is Kumble a leg spinner or left arm spinner?

Hi Mani,

You will probably get a lot of mail on this one!!

Anil Kumble (from Karnataka) bowls fastish leg spin, indeed like Chandra.
Naren Hirwani (MP) is a legspinner too who depends more on flight.  Sairaj
Bahutule (Bombay) is also a contender for this role.  The current leading
Indian left-arm orthodox bowlers are Venkatapathy Raju (Hyd) and Utpal
Chatterjee (Ben).  Off-spinners are Rajesh Chauhan (MP) and Ashish Kapoor
(TN).

Kapoor, Bahutule and Chatterjee are (barely) passable allrounders.

Dipak.

Is Kumble a leg spinner or left arm spinner?

mani,
Kumble is a leggie in the chandrashekhar mould. He's very quick
through the air and doesn't float the ball much. His main weapon is his
variation in pace, his normal delivery skids in to the batsmen like an
incutter, but every once in a while he bowls a genuine quick ball, which
he calls his rocket ball, bewildering batsmen, and sometimes the WK:) He
also has a slow'un, which spins a lot and has exactly the same effect

Cheers,
    Roon

He certainly is a right arm spinner.  Pretty fast one, too.

I think Kapoor has moved to Punjab.

I think the columnist's tongue was slightly in his cheek there.

Is Kumble a leg spinner or left arm spinner?

I first thought of asking a question: Is Kumble a spinner?

I gather from some recent reports that he does bowl some leg
spinners and bowled couple of them in the Bangalore test!
Good for him:-)

As to his speed, his faster balls were faster than Kapil
Dev's average balls during the tour of New Zealand 1993-94
(is that right or am I daydreaming? someone from NZ please
comment) but then Kapil Dev was pretty slow during that
time.
