Start with 50 wickets (or any convenient number) to make it easier.
Who held it for the longest?

My memories only go this far

Trueman
Gibbs???
Lillee
Botham
Hadlee
Kapil
Walsh
Murali

** Akram and Warne came very close to having this record

The nearest Wasim Akram came to the record was after the 1st Test in Sri Lanka in 2000, when he
reached 404 wickets and was 45 behind Walsh. He was never in the top 3.

Don't think so. Iirc, Gibbs last toured Oz in 1975/6 (aged 40). Well
after FST retired.

You're right, I had thought that FST had broken the record at the Oval,
I recall that the number was painted on the gasometer there in 64.
Looking back he must have had the record for some time and what was
celebrated at the Oval was being the first to take 300 wickets in
Tests.  The previous record must have been about 250?   Considering he
missed time for national service and a couple of tours for 'disciplinary
reasons' he potentially could have got about 350 or so?

I don't think Benaud ever had it since he played at the same time as
FST, possibly Bedser? Before that I would think Barnes, Grimmett then
Lindwall?

Clarrie Grimmett was the first to 200 wickets.

Alec Bedser got to 236 in 1955 and an aging Ray Lindwall came close at Eden
Gardens in 1959 with 228 before he retired.

Grimmett held the record until the 4th test between Eng and Aus in 1962/63
when Brian Statham overhauled Grimmett.  After that test match Trueman (also
playing) reached 234 to Statham's 241 and Benaud's 230 - what a race!!!  At
the end of the series Benaud and Trueman were tied at 236 with Statham at
242.

Freddie surpassed his long-time bowling partner in T3 vs NZ that same year.
Statham did not go on that tour and his appearances for England became
sporadic until both pacemen ended their careers in 1965.

Richie Benaud was in the hunt for a while, but as far I can calculate he was
first shut out from the world record by Statham, and then by Trueman who
raced away with the lead.

Aslam I am sure will provide the well-researched stats.

Should read Bedser

Statham's 242 I think. Benaud never held the record. Him and
Trueman were at 230 around the same time. And Trueman went
ahead. Talking of Benaud, he had wonderful record against
India(in India). My dad used to say he was the best leggie recalling
some of Benaud's bowling during his Kolkata days.
