Clarrie Grimmett was the first to 200 wickets.
Alec Bedser got to 236 in 1955 and an aging Ray Lindwall came close at Eden
Gardens in 1959 with 228 before he retired.
Grimmett held the record until the 4th test between Eng and Aus in 1962/63
when Brian Statham overhauled Grimmett. After that test match Trueman (also
playing) reached 234 to Statham's 241 and Benaud's 230 - what a race!!! At
the end of the series Benaud and Trueman were tied at 236 with Statham at
242.
Freddie surpassed his long-time bowling partner in T3 vs NZ that same year.
Statham did not go on that tour and his appearances for England became
sporadic until both pacemen ended their careers in 1965.
Richie Benaud was in the hunt for a while, but as far I can calculate he was
first shut out from the world record by Statham, and then by Trueman who
raced away with the lead.
Aslam I am sure will provide the well-researched stats.
