South African vice captain Hansie Cronje was yesterday appointed
as the new captain of the side in place of Kepler Wessels.

Wessels announced his retirement earlier in the week. He wanted
to step down after the tour of England in September, but decided
to stay on because of Cronje's poor form.

Cronje improved substantially during the short tour of Pakistan
in October, but South Africa lost all the one-day clashes
against Pakistan and Australia in the triangular series.

With New Zeeland already in South Africa for the upcoming series,
Cronje has his job cut out to lead the side (withou Alan Donald -
still injured) to victory.
